I know this Robert Palmer chappie died (but I don't know who he is nor that song he sang -- and here I was thinking I'd be alive during the 80s).

But much more importantly: Edward Said died on Wednesday!

How did this news pass me by?

Please, the NY Times had it on their website before Columbia did and that's where he teaches! I found out yesterday because someone mentioned it in seminar.

*sings* "you might as well face it, you're addicted to love . . " Are you sure you were alive during the 80's? *g*

But yes,I'm very sad about Edward Said. I guess he died on Wednesday, I didn't see it until yesterday, but then it was all over the internet news services. He spoke at my niece's high-school commencement a few years ago, and I was more put out at missing out on him than on missing her graduation. /lousy aunt

Well, I'm not so much put out as just struck. I'm very sceptical of his political views but still, he was an important figure.

While I by no means agreed with all of his views, he's one of the few people I can think of who had taken an intellectual approach to the Palestinian situation. I hope there's someone willing and able to fill his shoes!
