Today I wrote 6,157 words! I am not on track; I am over track. And I have finally cracked it. Read more... )
Because regency is not about the regency (the actual historical period). It is about a fanon. With the historical period being the canon.

Total written in November: 35,166 words. Pivot happened at: 22,249 words. Note to future: it apparently takes me that many words to discover my stride.

I shall now walk the cavapoochon and then watch Northanger Abbey (2007) for some more regency fanon.

Nanonwrimo is dead, long live CamWriMo! That's my local writing group, formerly known as my local chapter of Nanowrimo. November lives on as the noveling month.

My word count today: 2,305 words.
My genre: m/m regency romance novel.
My challenge: actually to finish and not be lured away by shiny new object syndrome on the 15th of November, as is my wont.
My plan: Go to the YHA write-in every Saturday morning. Go to my own instigated write-in at the YHA every Tuesday after work. Go to the YHA tomorrow at 11 and to Caffé Nero whenever.

This is probably lodged somewhere in DW's cross-post archive but I found it again last week and want to re-archive it for myself.

I know that it seems as if I'm not writing DP because I post so rarely but for a few weeks, I actually have been writing as well as thinking very hard about the story of DP. It's moved in all sorts of directions I never thought it would; it's branched out in a way that I'm starting to suspect only an AU will (and perhaps origfic will be like that? Because what is origfic but AU?).

On to another writing assignment for Dean Wesley's Smith's "Writing into the Dark" workshop. The brief: Write 500-800 words (I wrote 601), with the trigger 'The Lost Face Restaurant', combining this with the last restaurant I was in. No genre, no action, just depth. Also, I wasn't allowed to think about it at all after having heard the prompt. So I dove straight in! Am loving these assignments; am also learning a lot. And remembering a lot of fic writing fun!

Author's notes: Based on the restaurant I frequented yesterday with my son Alexander (who booked under the name of 'Alex' and whose name appeared in biro on an A-5 sheet of tacked-up paper). https://master-wei.com/

I am going on holiday to Pefkos on the Greek island of Rhodes tomorrow! It is my first solo holiday in all the sixty years of my life on Earth. I've been on hols with others. I've been on research trips and conference trips by myself. But never on an actual beach holiday.

So I have to get All The Assignments done before I fly. Here's my latest assignment, this one from the follow-up course to Dean Wesley's Smith's Writing in Depth course, the Writing Into the Dark course. The brief: 500 words of an opening, no dialogue, no action, a character and a solar eclipse.

Orig fic. Whoa.

I'm going to do what I used to do in my LJ days of yore when stumped or brave or on a high: Type fic straight into the entry box. I've got to write 400 words. Topic: Nick or Nancy in a snowstorm (Dean Wesley Smith's instructions are rather binary here). Really clear setting and what character feels about it. No plot. No use of the word 'white'.

So here goes )

Just when I thought it was getting easier... This week I again wrote two versions. Last week's I found easier. All three texts below the cut.

I will attempt to do cut tags. In case they don't work: This is an exercise in describing 'Judy ran to the barn' without any plot, seen through Judy's mind; for the Dean Wesley Smith workshop 'Writing In Depth'. an exercise in describing 'Judy ran to the barn' without any plot, seen through Judy's mind; for the Dean Wesley Smith workshop 'Writing In Depth' )

There is meant to be a cut tag here. It says: An earlier attempt. How is this so hard?

In mid-January, I dusted off my Draco/Dudley/Harry fic. Begun in 2003 (yes!), enthusiastically revived during an epic 100k nano in 2019, this fic is now around 150,000 words long. I have been spending an hour a day whipping it into print-outable, beta'able shape! Sitting outside cafés in wintry temperatures, with winds flapping my laptop screen shut and viruses lurking in the warm indoors. Are there even still HP betas out there? Bits of this were, to my amazement and judging from decades old notes to self, beta'ed by people now lost to time and the internet.

But still: go me yay. And go past!me who made up this obsession-inducing head canon of boxer!hairdresser!Dudley and sorcerer's apprentice/ layabout/ Bob the Builder lusting!Draco. And lashes of Nazi angst.

Genfic.

Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] badgermonkey, I am, once again, pondering genfic )

I am also pondering my real-life non-fiction book. There are 507 items in my database of Things I Have Read for this book (books, articles). That is more than my Dompix and Orlipix together! I feel overwhelmed because I can remember perhaps one percent of the content of these items. I am crouched on the living-room floor, surrounded by paper, and am attempting to create some form of order and (haha, I wish!) a chapter plan.
