The sky is white. Shadows are very faint. A helicopter ploughed its furrow through the clouds; its outline was barely visible, pale grey.

"What happens when she gets a new boyfriend?" the girl with the curly hair had asked him, the girl whose name he had forgotten who had accosted him at the party whose host he couldn't remember and where he'd stood around in a corner, drinking a drink he couldn't recall.

This is what he seemed to be doing most of his nights these days. Stand around in corners. Watch Barbara from afar. Look, don't touch.

Sometimes he'd only see her hair. She was always surrounded by an entourage.

He had been at the centre of that entourage once. They all appeared to have forgotten him now. He didn't mind. He was content to stand in corners. It was disconcerting when people accosted him. The girl with the curly hair was a prime accoster, primed for accosting, lipsticked smile glued to her dimples, bracelet tinkling in time to the ice cubes in her highball.

"So? What are you going to do then? When she has a new boyfriend in her bed?"

The notion was bizarre. The question did not compute. Felix shrugged in a state of nonplus.

He should have known, though, from the way she was thrusting her décolletage at him that the question was not about Barbara.

"So what happens when you do? What happens when you get a new girlfriend? Are you still going to be curled up in her bed? Or on her carpet, or wherever it is you sleep in her house?"

The penny dropped farthing by farthing. The girl leered up at him. The notion was yet more bizarre.

Felix laughed a short barking laugh.

"Why?" she said. "It's not so strange. It's not strange? It's not. Strange."

He realised then that she was drunk. The ice cubes tinkled against each other. There was no liquid left in her glass.

"No," he said. "It isn't."

Nor was it. How could it be strange? He had been Barbara's right-hand man, her second-in-command, the star in her eye, the Adam in her apple, her love, her life. If you couldn't get next to Barbara, you might be able to get in with the spice in her sugar. Felix? He could have a fine time, if he chose, feasting on the droppings from Barbara's banquet.

He kept his arms to himself. He smiled vague smiles. It was enough to stay in the corner. After a while, the curly-haired girl went away, and Felix found Barbara's blonde head in the distance.

There had been a pool at this party. Electric lights formed patterns across its meniscus. As the night got earlier, some of the guests pushed each other into the water. Women with dyed hair shrieked in faux panic, and the air smelled of fleur-de-lys.

That had been yesterday. Or the day before. Or perhaps it was still to happen.

Time was strange like that for Felix. These days.

So I am absurd. Only this morning I was typing a comment to [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza, denying that you need to love canon in order to love fanon, citing the rubbishness of HP and the crapness of SGA, and no sooner do I sign off LJ than I run to download an episode of SGA series 2 because I saw a screencap of Rodney kissing a woman and whoa,

I am totally sucked into Duet.

liek omg @-@

Now: how do I make a screencap? I watched the thing as a Quick Time movie (cleverly transfigured from an .avi file, after many, many minutes of googling around). I have an ibook, MacOSX. I need screencaps. Three, to be precise. No, four. Four screeneroonycapulets.

Alternatively, is there a site that has, liek, a million of them already?

Heh, and I am starting to learn their names: Carson Beckett, Laura Cadman, Katie Brown, ooh I am good.

Zelenka speaks Czech and gazes at Rodney, and the gazing is mutual.

Hm, I need to get out more.

ETA: I do get out more! Only yesterday I was in London. Again! For the fourth time in 3 weeks! I went to Carluccio's and Kew and Bonham's. It did not save me from downloading SGA. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo! You are wonderful!!
