The day is hot and still. I sat outside for 1 1/2 hours, with my body in the shade and only my feet in the sun, and even so felt dizzy afterwards. The shade itself is hot and still. Now and again, the leaves move sluggishly.

The lawn is baked. The bald patches are hard and grey-coloured.

The buddleia globosa is coming into full bloom today. Yesterday there were only one or two blossoms; already today, the whole thing is sprinkled with yellow orbs. It is my favourite plant in the whole garden. Last year, I remember sitting in bees as they buzzed all round in the buddleia.

An insect just flew into the room.

This weather is not conducive to working. My mind has fallen asleep.

You could tell it was going to be hot this morning at 8. We had breakfast in the garden. It was lovely then, no sun, balmy crisp air, but the heat was in the air, it was waiting. The sky was hazy. It still is.
