reccing experimental fic
Nov. 8th, 2004 09:39 pmI had some nice responses to my request for experimental fic (though I could do with more! Please!) And the one I've liked best so far is this one, reccec by Cathexys:
Walking Shadow by
pogrebin.
This is phenomenally impressive. I haven't been this compelled by a story without sex for... a long time! I really liked the chronological shuffle-structure, the flashbacks and flashforwards, and I absolutely loved the sideways jumps to Cinderella. The prose is glorious: not a word wrong.
It had me spellbound. And what I especially loved was that she managed to marry experimental luscious prose with a hard core of very-well-thought-through plot. It all makes sense and, at some point, it all came together for me -- disjointed on the page, together in
my head (I loved that).
I had to smile at the ending because I'd just been involved in a long debate with Cathexys about multiple endings and my dislike of them. But in this fic they worked. Because they were structured into the fic's very beginning. Somehow also a very doomful, grim fic.
