I'm writing this in Word for later posting as I've unplugged my modem to protect myself from electrical zappage.

The storm is raging now. The sky is a muddy white, strangely luminous. Big flashes of white light up across it (what in German is called Wetterleuchten). Cold air blows through the half-shut windows. Thick ropes of water fall from the roof gutters. The windows are pockmarked with rainddrops. There is an overall whooshing sound, the sound of heavy rain streaming down. Some tiny drops hit me as I type but I cannot bear to shut the windows completely; the change in climate is too welcome.

The light is yellow and soupy. All contours are blurred by a haze of rain. There is a loud drumming noise of rain hitting roof tiles.

Whoops, I've had to shut the window. I just realised that my chapter outline (handwritten in biro) has completely dissolved.

Ooh, just now a very loud thunderclap cracked to the left of us. It is a dry, explosive sound, like an amplified fart. This is followed by distant rumbling.

ETA: There was a spectacular crack, and then my computer went haywire. I was in the process of typing the word 'text', and suddenly the iMac, of its own accord and in ghostly fashion, started typing tttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
ttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
ttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
ttttttt
and it just continued to do this before my eyes, filling page after page of my Word document while I frantically hit the 'escape' key and the 'power off' key and finally pulled the plug out of its socket.

Subsequently, I discovered that I had unplugged the modem but not the wireless airport; my downstairs laptop was still connected to the internet although that shouldn't be happening, should it? How could the airport be connected when the modem was not, as the airport itself is connected to the modem? But maybe it's enough to have the computer simply on, even if not wired up, because after all, we have overland electricity cables outside our house. I am puzzled and impressed by the Power of Teh Electrical Storm.

I recovered my document, minus a paragraph, but phew. Next time I will turn everything totally OFF.

Now the air has a bite in it. I am wearing a summer cardie for the first time in weeks!

psst -- might want to edit this post to cut that line of 'tttttt' down a bit, since it'll make most people's friends pages scroll :)

How do you mean, it 'makes' people's page scroll?? Don't tell me this ghost of a ttttttt is continuing to work its evil ways...??!

When your text (or an image) is wider than the person's screen, then a scroll bar gets added to the bottom so one can scroll horizontally.

The big problem comes when a style is written so that if one post is too wide, it makes *all* the posts that wide, so one *has* to scroll horizontally to see everything.

So it's not that it makes people's page scroll, but it makes people's page so they have to scroll :D

Many layouts can't handle long lines of unbroken text, so having a long line of unbroken text will make the entire page stretch out waaaay past the size of the browser, so everything else posted on the page will also stretch and you have to sidescroll to read your friends page until the entry drops off. :)

Yes, yes, turn off your computer and unplug it when there is a storm. Otherwise you could permanently damage it.

You could get a surge protector (a proper one, not the real cheap/fake ones) to protect your computer too.

Ah, sice scroll! I understand! I will introduce paragraph breaks! I always get annoyed when that sidescrolling thing happens to me. Thank you, O Computer Wonder Wise One! *g*

Yes, thank you! Rahaeli just explained that she meant side scroll, not down scroll. I hate it when that happens. I have now introduced paragraph breaks and added a little nifty marquee effect as well to simulate the Ghost in t'Machine.

Aha! So it's not just the internet but the electric grid? And what about the laptops that stay on via battery power?

Still unplug a laptop and just run off battery power, because the problem isn't actually the loss of electricity but too much electricity.

Your description of cool air after a storm like that makes me envious ;-)
It's 10PM and still 24 degrees outside, hardly any wind at all. I'm so sick of it.

I'm envious, too. It's nearly 11 pm and still so hot and humid that I'm sitting here with a cooling pad. You know those little blue gel packs you can put on injuries.

It is a dry, explosive sound, like an amplified fart.
*cackles* Thanks so much for that. :)

It was so stormy here last night it woke me up. But due to the sweet joy of being on summer holidays, I could lie awake and listen to the thunder for half an hour. Joy!

Scary! We had a weird black cloud fly over really fast, everything got dark for a couple of minutes, some rain splattered on us for two minutes and then it passed. The winds have been almost gale force for the past two days. It's just very, very strange.

aargh! never leave a 'puter plugged in during a storm!!

wish it'd rain here. birdboy is growing very bored of watering the garden (he always seems to end up wetter than the plants).

b.x :)

I am wearing socks right now, it has cooled down so much! And (*gulp*) it even looks as if it's going to rain yet again! Just when we've had a trampoline delivered...

We don't water. Our garden is the Namib desert. Our hose connection is broken and the new one doesn't fit and the shop has to 'order one in' and well, I've adopted the policy of 'eco-friendly dry garden'....

It's cooled down in Berlin, too. *Only* about 27 degrees today. Which really is still very warm but feels almost chilly in comparison to the avarage 35 degrees of the last weeks. Though it could just be me. The Chillyness. I actually managed to get myself a cold two days before the exam. *sigh* It's already a bit better than yesterday though...
