Sci Fi
Alien Alert.

"Listen, captain."

The comm crackled in flight lieutenant Ignaz Stravinsky's ear. He ducked behind one of the purple boulders that were strewn so liberally across the northern plains of the southern continent and held his breath.

"I've got a location read-out."

The voice was unfamiliar. The English words were spoken with a slight accent, also unfamiliar to Ignaz. Now another voice answered, in a deep American drawl. New York? Albuquerque?

"Roger that, sarge. Data received. Has to be run through the system first but the doc reckons it's some kind of an alien life form."

Ignaz pressed himself against the boulder. He reached for his hip holster and let his fingers close around the butt of his fazar. He had no idea how these strangers' voices had ended up on his own communications circuit. It was like a crossed party line. He wondered how far away these people were, and whether he should be getting worried about this alien life form they had discovered.

"Captain?" The voice was muffled now, like someone trying to whisper over the ether.

"Yes, sarge. Speak."

"I'm nearly on top of the loc."

"D'you need back-up?"

"I have a visual, sir. There's only one of them."

"Remember, sarge. We need this one alive. Stun setting only."

"Roger and out."

Something cracked behind the boulder. It couldn't have been a twig because the southern continent of the Overnight Planet didn't have trees or shrubs big enough to produce twigs.

Ignaz crept around the side of the boulder, treading lightly. He'd pulled out his fazar. His left tentacle snaked around the rock and felt for shifts in the air.

Then the air cracked in half, his fazar flew in an arc, pain knocked his head sideways and back to front.

"Got him, captain," crackled the comm.

Something sizzling seared through Ignaz's ear holes and the world went black.
