Berlin soap boys: Pay-off!
Feb. 26th, 2010 12:02 pmYesterday's ep has not been subbed yet but it's too good not to share (and Memory for my own repeat-drooling [and cringeing] pleasure)!
Lenny / Carsten Fade-to-curtain time!! Verbotene Gardine!
Also behind the cut: My dialogue translation of the ep. Best line evah: Lenny to Carsten about his 'girlfriend' Emily (we all know what function the 'girlfriends' have in soaps, though, don't we?): I don't know what was wrong with me. Every time I was in bed with Emily, I didn't stop thinking about you.'
For the clueless ones: Lenny's the blond one (this means he's the one who's wrestling with his sexuality, angsting, and probably topping -- contrary to Japanese manga convention but true to soap lore); Carsten's the dark-haired one (which means his angsting is slightly less as he has already somewhat come to terms with his sexuality; nevertheless, the dark rugged one is probably the bottom -- yet who knows?? We fade to curtain!!).

What they say:
0.11 C: OK, then let's talk.
0.19 C: I can't figure it out. First you plan for my own gang to beat me up then you throw yourself at the last second in between to protect me.
0.38 L: Yeah, because only then did I realise what I wanted, and what not.
C: Then you turn up at my grandma's bedside to tell me you love me. How absurd is that.
0.50 L: But it's true.
L then reminisces about his horrible time with the military, how he was bullied for supposedly being gay, being called 'Jenny', and how he didn't want this ever to happen again. When the thing with C happened, he panicked. And hoped that when C had gone, it would all stop again.
1.45 L: But it didn't work out that way.
1.48 C: *soulful look in front of gauze curtain*
1.52 L: I was really schizo. The more I wanted you, the worse I treated you.
1.58 C: And what about Emily?
L says he was initially probably in love with Emily. At least t felt like that.
2.14 L: But then you came along.
2.20 L: At some point I thought I was going insane. I'd lie in bed next to Emily and I'd be thinking only about you!
*soulful cuts back and forth, incl. curtain*
2.34 L: At some point, she really had become only my alibi girlfriend. If I'd known earlier, I could have saved both of you lots of trouble.
2.46 C: I, too, couldn't cope for a long time. *sits on bed* I was hiding from myself, from you, from the gang, from my father.
C tells about L's sister's sympathy for his gay plight.
3.27: L: I understand. After everything you've been through because of me, I understand if there's nothing left now.
3.35 C: Well, but why do you think I'm here right now?
3.51 L: Why?
3.56 C: You're such an arsehole.
(If this were American, I might put 'asshole'; if it were English, I might go with 'bastard' or 'dickhead' or 'idiot', instead.)
*kiss* *fade to gauze curtain*
4.15 L: OK.
C: OK good or OK bad?
L: Well, somehow I imagined it to be different.
4.25 C: What, how?
4.27 L: Yeah, well, somehow... longer?
4.32 C: Well, that wasn't my fault. For the first time...
4.45 L: Yeah, it was... wow.
*There follow several symbolic close-ups of the espresso maker. Note proximity of fruit bowl.*
Mum says: I thought Lenny looked happy!
*cut to street*
5.58: C: Where did you say the underground was again?
L: Well, we could just have another walk around the block.
6.25 gang member (don't know if this one is called Junior or Scholzi): Oh man, tell me boys, has it suddenly got a whole lot warmer?
(word play on the German 'warm brother' for 'homosexual man')
Tuner: Shut up, dude. Just shut your trap, eh.
