Pushing the spectrum
Apr. 23rd, 2003 10:44 amI have just noticed: on my user profile, I now have almost more Interests displayed in black (unique) than in purple (shared by others).
What does this mean?
Heh. This is the kind of pointless post that is likely to get 511 comments. Or should that be 23 exactly, to accord with the Lucky Number Scale?
Recent fics I have enjoyed include:
Beasts by
eyebrowofdoom.
This one lingers in the memory. It is one of the most gorgeous fics Belinda has written, and she has written a fistful of gorgeous stuff. It's writing of the highest calibre, and it captures a quaint, 19th C. idiom that just makes my spine shiver. Ned Kelly / Joe Byrne, fps.
Eric the Potplant by
cupiscent.
Simply wow. Unusual and like a fresh wind. Miranda Otto by herself and with others. Unashamedly het. Scenes, dialogue and emotional tugs of war had my heart beating.
Cusp by Shaenie
Notes
I popped several valves reading this, and ended up breathless. Then dreamed about it all night! This is mindblowing. A highly original Billy, a delishsome Dom, and some of the hottest sex I have ever read. The prose is a wonderful mixture of hallucinatory-subjective and crystal-clear. Billy/Dom.
The Mirror by Kete
Very moving, poignant Frodo/Orc fic. It recasts orcs as tragic creatures, rounding out Tolkien's manichean set-up. It is powerful about Frodo's scars and Frodo/Sauron. Beautifully written and conceived. Made my heart ache.
Also: Karl/Viggo pics be here. (Being dads: buying toys.)

Never thought he was really hot out of Aragorn's clothes... it's like... he's two different persons:
Oh, Viggo,Viggo... My history with that man.
I used to despise and look down on him. I thought his cleft chin was absurd. I read his puerile poetry. I gagged at the sight of his ridiculous "art". I smote and struggled against the likes of
Well, not forced. Encouraged. Nagged.
So I wrote him. It started out as a mock-scoff-spoof destroy-Viggo fic, and then I realised I can't write like that; I crawled into the man's head (and found it surprisingly easy) and had to feel sympathy.
And then he wore that anti-Iraq T-shirt and looked so cute with Karl (except I do wish Karl would stand next to Dom once in a while -- indeed, *once*!). And oh yes, the ext-DVD!! Where he's so polite and tells that nice story about Kiran (*swoons*) and is much cleverer than Orli.
So I guess I sort of came round to him.
But I can take him only in limited doses.
But I always liked him as Aragorn. It's the beard; it hides the cleft.

It is possible. I did love it so probably mentioned it in a post. I actually even made an AIM icon inspired by Cusp, lol:

I can't say I despise(d) him, really, but yeah, I always thought he was a bit... naive and uninteresting despite his artistic tendencies. lol. And the cleft chin, ugh. Totally with you on the cleft chin. Not to mention that besides

Well, he's ok. I always thought he was nice, you know? Just a bit... plainer than most people make him. Also, besides The Indian Runner (which I actually loved) and Lord Of The Rings, I never really thought he was that great of an actor. He's downright plain and ugly in Albino Alligator, and just very very very bad in Psycho (though that movie is just horrendous, and Julianne Moore is much much worse than he is, lol). And there are a bunch of other movies that I've seen in which he was just forgettable. I think he's very much average, you know? Not baaaaad, but not great either. And since with the cleft chin, he really isn't my type... lol
That said, I was very surprised by his performance in Lord Of The Rings. Given my thoughts on him, I was surprised to find him this good as Aragorn. He really does make a wonderful Aragorn... *shakes head* I guess that's part of wwhat makes him interesting to a lot of persons, lol. That he can be this good and gorgeous in one movie, and just plain in a lot of other occasions.... but I do respect him for taking a stand on Irak, and I don't think he's stupid. I just still find him plain. *shrugs*
And I'm sorry for rambling, lol. Didn't mean to. But it's interesting to talk about these actors, the whys and hows of our likes and dislikes. I know why I don't particularly like Viggo, but see, I'm not sure I can really tell why I find Dom so fascinating. It's not even that he's proved to be such an amazing actor, yet, lol.
Oh, and I don't remember seeing Viggo all that naked in Indian Runner... he does appear completely nude, front and back, in Psycho. And seeing how bad Psycho is, I'm thinking it might be the DVD you're referring to... can't be certain. :-)
Again, sorry for rambling, just blame it on the fever, lol.

Date: 2003-04-23 10:28 am (UTC)I don't know Zarah's "Flash". Am wary of Viggorli.
And I can't remember the damn DVD now that had Viggo naked. It wasn't Psycho. It was something about two brothers, and Viggo was the Bad Brother. Terrible script. But: full-frontal nudity.

It is because Dom *is* fascinating. And a sex god. Heh, you're hardly going to get any sense out of me on this one. As to the acting: well, ho-hum. He does the job as Merry, let's put it that way. I like him *much* better as Geoffrey Shawcross (Hetty Wainthropp Investigates) however. He is just scrumptious to *eat* in that series. (A lot of ffding is required, that is also true.) It's because he seems to have layers; you don't think, in interviews, that you're getting all of the man. So you can *project*. And for fic purposes, he's just the Ultimate Condiment: he really will go with anyone at all. Take any actor, any scenario, mix Dom up with it, and you've got a winner. It never fails.
Also, he's just too yummy to look at. Because he's not Beautiful in the conventional sense. And that voice.... *faints clear away* And all that POTENTIAL. It is true that he seems to spend most of his time being unemployed and somehow wangling his way to a Green Card. But!!!
Here's my current breakdown of the top 3 of my hard drive pics:
Orli 78 pics
Karl 110 pics
Dom 197 pics
You see: there's no hope for me.

Date: 2003-04-23 12:16 pm (UTC)Well, yeah, me too. But Zarah's Flash is Zarah's. So it's much much much better than any other Viggorli. I loved it and I can safely say it's the only Viggorli I ever really liked. Well, no, wait, that's not quite right. I actually really really liked Zarah's De.Crescendo as well. But yeah, it's Zarah, you know?
It was something about two brothers, and Viggo was the Bad Brother. Terrible script. But: full-frontal nudity.
Mmmm... definitely The Indian Runner, then. Funny, I remember I really loved it, and yet, I don't remember the full frontal nudity. It was inspired by Bruce Springsteen's Highway Patrolman (the movie was, not the frontal nudity, lol), and since it takes place in Perrineville (that's my town! Look! It's got my name!), I might have been biased. Silly reason to like a movie, I know, but I really thought it captured the song's atmosphere. Though that was all of over ten years ago.
I'd quote you on Dom, but I think you got it just right. He does work with anyone and he does seem to have more layers than most. Not to mention potential. And mystery, because... what the heck is he doing these days? lol
As for him being scrumptious in the Hetty Wainthrop series... well, damn my being French, mph. Have never been able to catch even one of these eps. *pouts*
As for pictures... me, I've got... 25 Orli pics, 60 Dom pics, 36 Billy pics, and 33 Elijah ones. My collection is pathetic, lol. Though it used to be three times as big before my last computer crisis. We can still notice how Dom wins over everybody else. Also, complete absence of humans in my collection. No Viggo, no Karl... lol. Oh, wait, I do have a few of Dave. Again, I had dozens of Dave but lost them all in the last computer crisis.

Unless someone else did previously, I think you'll find it was me. Not that it matters. Just makes me slightly concerned about your memory as it was only yesterday afternoon!!
