velvet goldmine
Jun. 27th, 2003 12:19 amVelvet Goldmine is a brilliant movie!
And Ewan McGregar (whom I don't like) is bloody brilliant in it!
It is a visually delight, and aesthetically totally satisfying. I love the editing, I love the madness of it, I love the use of metaphors. I love the nostalgic mood of it, and the way it is about more than music. And I *love* what it does to Citizen Kane which is a film I find highly overrated. Todd Haynes (I want to see more, more, more of his movies now!) takes the basic frame story of Citizen Kane (journalist's interviews, flashbacks, rise and fall etc.) and twists and subverts it very, very cleverly. Squeeworthily! It's only towards the end that I realised *how much* he was subverting it and how different this particular journalist is from the non-involved outsider voice in Kane. What a plot twist! And what an ending!
I stared at extras until t'hubs came home and then told him that we have to see this film again tomorrow. He is going to *love* the McGregor stage scenes. *I* love the McGregor stage scenes! The first McGregor stage scene is fucking spellbinding!
And the *love*.... The heart eyes!
I was so glued to the TV that I never got to my chocolate trifle. Nor, alas, did I write Malta!fic.
I did, however, do a ffd through Monkey's Mask which doesn't seem like a fabulous film but quite watchable. I was ffding to get to John Noble whom none of us has ever seen in action but there he was!!!! I *swooned*. How absurd. I frozeframed him and checked him out *in colour*. I've never even seen a colour pic of him! Nobody has! His eyes are as brooding as they are in this icon plus they are blueish-green (*swoons*), and his *lips* are just gah. And his *voice*! Very deep and sonorous and a bit rumbling; it carries like a stage actor's voice would. He's also got quite a slight build.
I kept seeing him in Bern's arms!!!!!! *swoons again* They are so right for each other!!!!
Okay, end of fangirlish squeeing. I can't *wait* for Denethor.
Oh, and Marton is in that film, too! He's quite the dish although not as much of a spunk as he was as Yorgi in xXx,
Oh, and there's lots of full frontal nudity of the two lead women in bed. Kelly McGillis at one point says to Susie Porter while mauling Susie's mouth: "You're a great fuck but a lousy detective."
I will report more once I've seen it without my finger glued to the ffd.
Thank you so much for reccing Velvet Goldmine! What a revelation of a film!

Date: 2003-06-27 03:36 am (UTC)Am watching it again tonight with t'hubster. When he came home from his dinner, I talked about nothing but for half an hour.
Re:
Date: 2003-06-27 04:44 am (UTC)And there is, there's ambiguity, and yes. yesyesyes. VG fixes my craving for subtle hot interesting m/m existence every time. And that moment in particular, aah. Everything I love about slash is in that moment, the romance and the heartache and the deceit and the fabulous clothes and the intimacy and the beautiful skin. Hence default. =)

Cal, who knows almost the entire movie from memory, despite not seeing it in Over A Year (travesty).

I'm so pleased you liked it! Communal viewing, definitely!
Todd Haynes is a genius, but all his films are completely different. See 'Poison' if you can get hold of it - it's an early one. VG is my favourite though, although I'm told by knowledgable flatmate that it's not his best work. *shrugs* Well, what do I know?

Date: 2003-06-27 03:02 pm (UTC)I remember liking Poison when I saw it, although it was quite a while ago, and I was probably awfully impressed by arty-farty pretentious angst at the time. Far From Heaven was good, as Gabby said. I liked Julianne Moore in that, plus it was just gorgeous to look at.
But Velvet Goldmine, I love.
