Date: 2003-06-30 04:38 pm (UTC)I can name others I feel like that about... Brad Pitt, for one. Josh Hartnett, Johnny Depp... I love them, they're pretty, they look good on screen no matter what, they're good actors, but... to me, it feels like they lack something.
Dom... Dom's different. He's not bad looking, of course. Great body, amazing eyes... but he's not as perfect. And he makes up for it with sparkling personality. Dom makes me laugh. And that really turns me on. It's definitely why he's my favorite, because he's not perfect, not eerily beautiful, not pretty in the least... and just... mischievous is the word, really. The one word that sums him up for me. And what I like best in anybody.
If I look at all my favorite people, they're either big dorks, or good looking guys with a lot of humour. Like... uh... Dom, Al Pacino, Robbie Williams (I never said they couldn't be gorgeous, they just need to be clowns, too), Chris Kirkpatrick... These guys don't just make me go "ooooo, pretty", they make me laugh my ass off. And I love them for it. :-)
Orlando doesn't really make me laugh, though he does make me smile on occasion. :-)

I know exactly what you mean about the pretty and up until 4 weeks ago I would just have shouted YESYESYES and we would never have had this fascinating comment exchange so isn't life wonderful? I mean, I am the woman who started the Manly Men list (and who has now shamefully all but abandoned it -- but only temporarily!) and who mocked at all those tonsilboy-lovers and who scoffed at all but the rarest of pairings, preferrably crew not cast and, if cast, preferrably orc. So I *know* the anti-pretty sentiment. And I had gone off Orli to such an extent that I didn't even find him pretty anymore. I downloaded no pic at all of him for about 6 months! The ext-DVD had totally turned me off him. Literally, to me he *was* boring!Orli!
So my recent rediscovery is a kind of wallowing in the mainstream gush. Heh. It's the curls wot done it, and the deep blue sea in those Mediterranean pics flashed at me by a mischievous
Also, I don't even *know* whether he's a good actor yet. You can't tell with Legolas, and you can't tell with BHD, and the only other thing I've seen him in is Midsomer where I swoon too much to be able to tell (er...) Also, Dom: acting ability? No clue. Also, strangely, don't care. Well, it's nice if they can act as well, a welcome bonus, but not *essential*, is it? There are actors whose acting I admire intensely but who leave my pathetic little fannish heart quite cool.
I do like Dom (and here Demelza and I are in agreement!) much better as Geoffrey than I do as Merry. The wig irritates.
But yes, Dom's not conventional. At the same time, he is a sex god.

Date: 2003-07-01 04:10 pm (UTC)Well, Orli to me never really was boring!Orli. I didn't go all fangirly over him after watching FotR, but since I got into lotrips through
It's funny because people in fandoms often think strongly about the various characters/actors involved. It's not rare to adore someone and hate another. But even if I really feel like a complete Dom fangirl most times, there isn't any strong feelings for anybody from me. Again, actor world and fanfiction world are two very opposite things, here. I don't mind reading any pairing/character. But I really do believe that even though I got into this fandom through Orli, I wouldn't have stayed long if it hadn't been for Dom. It's just weird to me that Orlando could leave me so indifferent in RL, and yet appeal to me in fanfiction (hell, the last thing I wrote was centered around his perception of the scene, so...).
Example: All those curly pics leave me shrugging. Yeah, ok, he's cute. Whatever. But you writing Boring!Orli? I'm all a-flutter! Same with stuff from
As for them being good actors or not... I agree with you, we can't really tell, yet. Though I've always kind of felt that Legolas was a bit overdone, you know? I always felt more at ease with the way Dom played Merry. But I'll want to wait and see more. What I do know is that when under scrutiny from the press and the fans, Dom is funnier, more lively, wittier and sillier than Orlando. From where I stand, Dom has more personality than most of them. He stands out. With or without his curls, Orli's just another pretty face, really.
And random, but... I sooooo want to be able to see some Hetty Wainthrop Dom, some day. Never got that here. *pouts* Wonder if I could find some on kazaa...

Date: 2003-07-01 04:30 pm (UTC)I don't have a video duplicating thingy but I can send you my Hetty (which I got from Demelza, bless her knitwear-wearing heart) and you can send it back after drooling to your heart's content.
Send surface address via email and Baby!Dom's yours!

Ack, how much of Dom have you *seen*? I've seen pitifully little. But you are probably right because Orli always comes across as a bit of a giggler and goer-along-with-everybody-else. Do I, at the moment, give a fart? Answer: No.
I have no idea why I swoon over the curls. I never used to like long hair on men. I did like that pic I once dug up, the one of Orli pre-fame, in his student days when he had long hair and I was intrigued even then. It's slightly clouding my writing perception of him. But that will pass. So I'm going to swoon while I can because who knows, the curls may go under the knife tomorrow. The man's coiffure is determined by his career.
You will *squee* over Baby!Dom! Dom kissing the girl! *squees* Unfortunately, I don't have the drag scene. But much squeeage to be had, much knitwear, and many sultry looks between Geoff and Mr W!!!!
Which one was Zarah's 'Cat'?
