Everyone's talking about pirates these days.

So here are my favourite pirates.

The wonderful, inimitable Wilde 13!

Germans of the world, unite. If we can't have Winnetou/Old Shatterhand, let us at least have pirate who can't spell K/pirate with star on his hat.

Die wilde (wilden?) 13! Jim Knopf! Oh, how I heart thee. My father used to read these books out to me; he had to hold my hand during all the scary parts. Die wilde (wilden?) 13 freaked me out almost as bad as Frau Malzahn.

No, not 'wilden'. It's not an adjective, it's part of their name: die Wilde 13. It's a sort of plural noun. And, of course, the deliciousness of them not being 13 at all... I remember going back through the books and counting each and every one of the pirates in all those illustrations and *boggling*.

Ah, okay. I wasn't sure if it was a part of the actual name. And yes! Counting them and always coming up short.

Obviously have no idea what you're talking about, but am reminded of 'learn to read' books they gave us at school, about pirates called Roger Red Hat and Billy Blue Hat. I think. Don't remember much else about them, but it's quite obvious to me now that they were shagging.

*bursts out laughing*

Yes, it seems obvious, simply from the names.

The books have been translated but are not well-known in t'English-speaking world. Very famous in Germany. Also, my father was best friends with the author, Michael Ende (now sadly dead) who also wrote the book that dreadful Wolfgang Petersen (Malta!!!!) film The Endless Story is based on (except he sued them and had his name taken off the credits because film such travesty).

It's M. Ende, Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver (volume 2 features more of the Wild 13, evil pirates of the high seas but swarthy and sexy as hell, they are all twins and no doubt committing incest non-stop but am not sure vol. 2 was ever translated).

I loved The Neverending Story! I still have it, all the pages are falling out. I refused to see the film because I knew it would be shit. I also read another of his books - I can't remember what it was called, but it was about a girl and some sinister faceless men... or something. I didn't realise he'd died, that's very sad.

I'll have to search out these pirate books!

You read it! *falls down* Bastian! Atreju!

And the book with the girl and the time thieves is called 'Momo' in German, and possibly 'The Grey Gentlemen' in English.

Woohoo!

Jim Knopf is a wonderful, wonderful book. But you need both volumes to get the full deliciousness of it.

Lovely, lovely icon! Did you scan the book?

For a moment I thought you wanted to slash old K with himself (which woggles my mind, but I'm sure you could do it somehow). There must be some plot incentive in the fact that they took turns in wearing the star, but my creativity has died and shrivelled up, I feel.

No, I found these on the web; I think I cropped a picture of the cover from amazon.de. Surprisingly few Jim Knopf sites out there. And remember , when they turn into die 12 Unbesiegbaren, they acquire all those Italianesque names-- swoon!

Ooooooooh, Antonio, Emilio, Fernando, Ignazio, Ludowico, Maximiliano, Nikolo, Rudolfo, Sebastiano, Theodoro, Ulrico, Xaverio.

*counts again* *12? Yes, 12*

My favourite character was Herr Tur-Tur, and Nepomuk, the half-dragon, was so cute :-)

Ack, you did these names *from memory*?????

*slips off chair*

I love the name Nepomuk. And Ursulapitschi. And remember the perpetuum mobile? Favourite character, favourite character... now that's a hard one. *ponders* This is very tricky.

I remember absolutely adoring as a child the whole Sturmauge scene, especially the part where Jim binds and subdues the Wilde 13. I'm sure there was some sort of slashiness at work there, I just can't pinpoint it. But I *shivered*. The *bondage* of it!

I can't choose a favourite right now! All of the characters are etched like icons into my brain. Herr Tur Tur, Herr Aermel for that matter, Frau Malzahn / Goldener Drache der Weisheit, Ping Pong (in his Waschzuber), Li Si (as blinder Passagier and when she's being schnippisch though not when she's getting scared and silly), Nepomuk, Schildnoeck (what was his name??), Gurumusch, Alfons der Viertel-vor-Zwoelfte, Frau Waas!

And of course Jim, Lukas and every single one of the Wilde 13!
