A propos:

"Gigi" means "tooth" (or "teeth") in Indonesian.

I knew you'd want to know this.

Ooo, saya suka sekali Bahasa Indonesia!

So, are you saying she's a biter? I can imagine Dom enjoying a nibbler...in fact, I just did.

*goes in search of cold shower*

PS I've been reading more of your Desert Prince series, and catching up on your other pieces - damn you're a good writer! Thank you for sharing your stories, even in German.

Ja, Ich spreche Deutsch besser als Indonesien jetzt, schade. Je parle aussi un peu de francais (pretend there's a cedilla on that) et chinois.

You lived in Indonesia? That's so cool! I was only there for 4 months, back in '91, but it's one of my favorite places on earth. I got a book and learned Indonesian, but I haven't had the opportunity to use it much since. What were you doing in Jakarta?

I miss the food terribly, especially lotek from Yogyakarta.

Eeek, I don't even *know* what lotek is. What is lotek?

I loved kerupuk and frogs' legs and baso soup. After we left Indonesia, my family moved to Sydney and there I took Indonesian at school for a few years. We still eat nasi goreng at least once every week!

*is amazed at being spoken to in Indonesian on LiveJournal*

Lotek is an amazing vegetable dish, recipe here. I remember mostly green beans, bean sprouts, tofu, yummy spices and peanut sauce, and this amazing semi-fermented sticky rice that came wrapped in banana leaves - nasi istimewa is what I called it, and she knew what I meant. I used to get it from this woman who had a little setup in her backyard in the old city of Yogya, just down the lane from where I took batik class, and next door to an abandoned octagonal mosque. Served on banana leaves, of course.

Saya lupa bahasa, tetapi tidak lupa Indonesia. Tidak pernah. Hooray for LJ!

PS. Now if I can just scrape together enough Indonesian to say something clever about slash to you on LJ, the cognitive dissonance may just be enough to do something extreme like scare all the birds or dethrone Dubya or something.

*mouth starts watering* I need to buy those ingredients! And that nasih istimewa sounds just *divine*.

*mouth drools (and, very unusually, not over Boys!!*

*looks around for food icon but the fish is the closest I get (the Lakritz somehow don't seem appropriate*

Now if I can just scrape together enough Indonesian to dethrone Dubya or something.

Oh, do! Scrape away!!!

A children's song (spelling? no clue):

Potong bebek ansa
Ansa di kuali
Nyonya minta dansa
Dansa empat kali
Sorong kekiri
Sorong kekanan
Lalalalalalalala La La La
