Does anyone know of any black woman (African, Maori, anything) who participated in LotR as an extra of some sort, most likely as an orc?? Does such a person appear on any of the DVD commentaries? I need to know this for a fic!

It's a struggle to find the few non-whites in the all-Caucasion world of Lotr!

there's a pic floating about of a maori girl in armour - i think rohirrim... ? and in the FOTR extended dvd extras, the design feature, you can see some maori girls as orcs. but no interviews, i don't think.

Well, an interview would really be too cloud-cuckooish but I am already more than happy with a mere visual! Will start trawling Fotr DVD. Thanks for pointing me to Design, that narrows it down somewhat, heh. Daea Nereem already alerted me to the black/Maori orc woman (and apparently she's pretty, too!) but didn't say where exactly.

And pic of Maori rohirrim? I haven't seen that one!!

Thank you for replying.

Can't help you at all, I'm afraid, but just wanted to register my general impressedness at your question. Impressive research. I think I deserve a medal if I get someone's eye colour right. Research-Lite, that's me.

*giggles*

Well, as you can see the art of research is to get others to do it for you... *winks*

I veer wildly between research overkill and research-what-research? Half the time I'm researching settings (I loved writing about Malta! I read the Rough Guide and sites on Maltese diacritics, beer brands and lots of lovely piccies of coastal cliffs!). And then there are things like Boring!Orli where the research value is precisely zero and I make everything up, including the words.

But I do have and always have had a thing for the rare pairings or obscure orcs. And you *have* to do research for those, no two ways about it.

You see, there you are, a perfect counter-argument to the Slash is an Evil Moral Force position! (Shakes head in appreciation.) Slash!Geography, Slash!Diacritics, Slash!Coastal-Studies, Slash!Orc-Ethnicity-Studies... Of course, you're not fooling anyone in these parts. WE all know in our bones you just do it for kink and you probably wear pink fluffy handcuffs while you type...

I stick my favourite diacritics up me and make the coastal parts fuck each other while I watch.

Woohey!

I know there is a quick shot of what appears to be a Maori woman extra in one of the extras on TTT DVD. Unfortunately, I can't recall which part, but she was definitely there.

Yes, someone called Daea Nereem already alerted me to that one! And now I will have to buy the stupid TTT DVD which is what I was trying to dig my heels in about. I just do not want to reward Peter Jackson twice over for his disappointing second film, and I have to buy the ext-DVD, of course. Drat. But thanks for replying!

I never knew you didn't approve of TTT. What is it - the botched Faramir section? That's what sticks in MY throat - plus of course Casting screwed up and didn't simply cast Sean Bean as Faramir (slightly different wig?) as well as Boromir, which was the obvious solution to Tolkien's unfortunate error of taste in killing off one of the most attractive men in the first volume.

Oh, I bored on about TTT here.

Tolkien made no error. Boromir is not attractive. PJ has made him attractive. This is one of the many things I liked about FotR (as opposed to the disappointment of TTT): that PJ actually improved on Boromir. Well, not improved but explored his psychology more. But this is my point: in Tolkien, Boromir is the bad brother and Faramir is the good brother, and Peter Jackson has fucked that constellation up completely, and I cannot forgive him for it.

Call me a sick twisted woman, but I liked Tolkien's Boromir in his stiff-necked humourless total-bastard way. Maybe it was the hair 'shorn about his shoulders' and the big horn, I can be very basic like that. I listened to heavy metal in my teens...

I quite agree with you about the Ents, and the Frodo-making-happy-friends-with-Nazgul-episode was a disaster. Aragorn's (blatant rip-off of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade)cliff-fall also got on my tit-ends. . Though I fantasise in a slightly queasy manner about what TTT remade by LJ would be like. You know, the battle for Helm's Deep raging in the background while various combinations of the Fellowship have an orgy in a convenient guard room, or magically save Film-Haldir's life by the magic Elvish expedient of having group sex with him. Meanwhile, Merry says, 'Hey Pippin, never mind those orcs, let's have fun with our hands tied.'

The Thai woman who was the standin for Pippin isn't black, but she is "of color," right? That's the only non-white woman I can identify, although I'm glad to hear there are at least one or two amongst the Orcs.

Yes, she is Fon. But I need a *black* woman. Although (ponders) I could tailor it to a small Thai one, if push came to shove.

Hm.

For now, I will grind my teeth, buy stupid TTT and trawl the extras.

Thanks for replying!
