Happy! Actually, I'm going to stop with the stereotypes now because it's getting old and also a student today said she thought that the woman acted so hysterical in Kurosawa's Rashomon "because all Orientals are like that; I know a Korean girl who should be sectioned". I haven't worked out a strategy for such comments; I was so shocked it took a minute for her rantings to sink in which is when I stopped her by saying, "well, we're not talking about real people here, we're talking about representations on film... etc." But afterwards I felt a bit lame for not having come down on her more strongly and setting a signal for the rest of the seminar. But wtf -- I'm not good thinking on my feet when confronted with such tinhattery. At least I did cut her off.
...yes, at least you did. All Orientals should be sectioned? WTF INDEED! If she said that in a New England classroom, girl would've been drawn and quartered by hyper-PC-sensitive profs and students alike.
Also, we prefer to be called "Asians," meanie-poo! "Orientals" is so colonial. Boo on her all the more!
I think you acted well, given the circumstances. But if she busts out with any further such comments, you'll lay the smackdown on her, won't you? ;)
In retrospect, I'm thinking I could have looked round the room and said, "Well, thank god there are no Asian students here." Or something similar which is humour but signals to the seminar how ridiculous her comments are. And I wonder if she would have said that if there had been. Probably, because she seems very stupid.
