Film:
Rashomon by Kurosawa (yes, yes, I know, Orlando likes this guy... I wonder, though, if he would have made an *intelligent contribution* to the discussion or just gushed). Students in groups to discuss: How is this different from Hollywood narrative? Compare to Pulp Fiction (which we discussed last week). What is the first story event (not plot event) we see? Which story is the 'real' story, and does it matter? Did you like the film? (Tuesday's seminar did not like it, today's seminar liked it. Are they humans or lemmings? And there's always one who claims it's because the film is "Japanese" and "all Orientals are like this" ...!! Tinhats are not confined to the online world.)

Images today
Comics! I brought in some Tintins, Neil Gaiman's Sandman (bought yesterday and only partially read), some Beanos, an X-Men and a Superman comic. They also brought in stuff. I photocopied the first two pages of the X-Men and the first page of one of the Tintins and whited out the text. Then I typed the text up on a separate sheet of paper and handed the Tintin-pix and the X-men-words to one group, and vice versa. They had to try and reconstruct the stories -- was it easier from the pics or from the words? And I got them to *draw* their version of the pictures to accompany the text.

Then I showed them the originals and we discussed all that. I think it worked. The class is swelling, what's more: the cool boys are now accompanied by another two girls (one cool) and another new boy - hah! Word is spreading!

Then we talked about the aesthetics of comics, the ideology of comics and how Batman interpellates you.

*wipes hands*

Hah. A day's work well done.

I also smuggled a print-out of my favourite bits of Transfigurations to work. Yes, I am still a slut to that fic (am now on my fourth or so reading) and I read it in the corridors, *walking to the library*.

The course sounds like it's going really well! The comic stuff is fascinating. And go you for getting more students taking it!

Am deeply amused by you re-reading Transigurations so many times. I have done the same thing! Can't wait for Saturday so we can all ramnble away at great length on the subject, as I am certain that everyone has read it!!

Yeah! I will ramble! Although have only read it once, so am relative lightweight. I'll have to go and swot up. Maybe I'll read it at work tomorrow, they won't notice.

I will quiz you on its interpellative qualities.

I can't wait till tomorrow either! Shall prob. be there around lunchtime. I have now *printed out* Transfigurations in order to feed the obsession when away from the computer. I squeezed the font and the margins and got it down to 122 pages. Which is still 61 sides of A4 in double-spread.

*stares at wad of paper*

Good lord! I have it printed as well. The best thing of course, is a PDA! I make PalmBooks of stuff and read them wherever and whenever I want!!

Am very much looking forward to tomorrow. Do let me know if and when you are arriving at Tottenham Hale and I am very happy to pick you up!

Well, I do like the printed page. I like the non-glaringness and the being-able to see the whole layout with one glance and the turning pages thing and the materiality of it.

Oh, not at all! The printed page is definitely the best. But I am always aware of firstly wasting ink on fics that aren't worth it and, secondly, having to carry out great wads of paper. Having an electronic copy is ideal. That way, I can always make a hard copy if the fic is worth it!

Ack! My bloody keyboard has finalyl given up the ghost and the crusor keys have stopped working!! Looks like today is keyboard shopping day! Sorry, just thought I'd express that bit of frustration as it happened as I sat down to answer this comment! [I use my cursor keys all the time and am lost without them!]

This class sounds like way too much fun to be educational. *g* Movies and comics, yay! And your class is growing, double-yay!

Heh. But education *is* fun! Although sometimes I think I'm pandering to my audience too much...

Uh, I'm an idiot...

but I don't seem to have your e-mail addy anymore, Lobelia, and I have a little book here that I really would like to send to you. It's just something a publisher sent that I think you'd really like. Please email me with an address where you can receive a small package. It's just a book, I promise! Pecos.
