Rashomon by Kurosawa (yes, yes, I know, Orlando likes this guy... I wonder, though, if he would have made an *intelligent contribution* to the discussion or just gushed). Students in groups to discuss: How is this different from Hollywood narrative? Compare to Pulp Fiction (which we discussed last week). What is the first story event (not plot event) we see? Which story is the 'real' story, and does it matter? Did you like the film? (Tuesday's seminar did not like it, today's seminar liked it. Are they humans or lemmings? And there's always one who claims it's because the film is "Japanese" and "all Orientals are like this" ...!! Tinhats are not confined to the online world.)

Comics! I brought in some Tintins, Neil Gaiman's Sandman (bought yesterday and only partially read), some Beanos, an X-Men and a Superman comic. They also brought in stuff. I photocopied the first two pages of the X-Men and the first page of one of the Tintins and whited out the text. Then I typed the text up on a separate sheet of paper and handed the Tintin-pix and the X-men-words to one group, and vice versa. They had to try and reconstruct the stories -- was it easier from the pics or from the words? And I got them to *draw* their version of the pictures to accompany the text.
Then I showed them the originals and we discussed all that. I think it worked. The class is swelling, what's more: the cool boys are now accompanied by another two girls (one cool) and another new boy - hah! Word is spreading!
Then we talked about the aesthetics of comics, the ideology of comics and how Batman interpellates you.
*wipes hands*
Hah. A day's work well done.
I also smuggled a print-out of my favourite bits of Transfigurations to work. Yes, I am still a slut to that fic (am now on my fourth or so reading) and I read it in the corridors, *walking to the library*.

Date: 2003-10-17 05:07 am (UTC)Well, I do like the printed page. I like the non-glaringness and the being-able to see the whole layout with one glance and the turning pages thing and the materiality of it.
*looks like Luddite*
