I can feel it already. Teaching starts in 3 weeks but I have a meeting tomorrow, and another one on Wednesday, and I have 5 modules to prepare. Sabbatical is definitely over. The match on the week-end helped no end in cheering me out of my state of near paralytic gloom at having to go back to work. But my footballing friend in London said a helpful thing: he pointed out that most people hate their jobs and it's just us academics (oh, and the footballers of this world...) who believe that their jobs are vocations. So I'm coming round to the notion that it's okay to hate my job and that my life can be happening elsewhere.
But the job does encroach upon my time. And I can see it happening already: I'm on LJ less, I read less, I am out of the loop. So, babes, forgive me if you see me more rarely! And keep me in the loop.
I am writing: the wraith fic. I am being inspired by Ursula Le Guin's descriptions of nature at the moment. I love the wraith. I'm even coming round to John. He's so hapless and determined. And so cute with the wraith. And I've drafted a sequel to the wraith fic, too, which is going to be Rodney/John -- I veer violently between obscure and everybody's OTP.
Wot i recently done readed
-Racine, Phèdre (in French!)
-Euripides, Bacchae (in English, alas - I have no Greek -- I loved this)
-Turgenyev, Fathers and Sons (I absolutely loved this; it's one of the most exquisite novels I've ever read)
- Ursula LeGuin, Rocannon's World (interesting to read early LeGuin and to see how she developed the same themes over and over)
Recs, please! Oh, please!
I am especially in the need of: fic recs. Good lord, I haven't read a fic in literally weeks. I need SGA fic! I've been out of the loop of SGA since the start of the World Cup and that was the beginning of June! I was sidetracked into football fandom where I am becoming ever more firmly ensconced but it's not, for me, a fic-based fandom. Unlike SGA where, for me, the fanon is more important than the canon. So it's SGA fic I crave!
You know the kind of stuff I like: the kind of stuff written by Shalott, Cesperanza, Resonant, Liviapenn, Simonesimone. The kind of stuff written by Turgenyev, Adam Thorpe, David Mitchell, Ann-Marie MacDonald and Jane Austen. Lovely stuff, deep stuff, quirky stuff. Stuff with realistic dialogue. At the moment, I don't feel like crack, though. *gg*
And if there's any really outstanding Draco fic out there: I'll read that, too! :-)
