I can feel it already. Teaching starts in 3 weeks but I have a meeting tomorrow, and another one on Wednesday, and I have 5 modules to prepare. Sabbatical is definitely over. The match on the week-end helped no end in cheering me out of my state of near paralytic gloom at having to go back to work. But my footballing friend in London said a helpful thing: he pointed out that most people hate their jobs and it's just us academics (oh, and the footballers of this world...) who believe that their jobs are vocations. So I'm coming round to the notion that it's okay to hate my job and that my life can be happening elsewhere.

But the job does encroach upon my time. And I can see it happening already: I'm on LJ less, I read less, I am out of the loop. So, babes, forgive me if you see me more rarely! And keep me in the loop.

I am writing: the wraith fic. I am being inspired by Ursula Le Guin's descriptions of nature at the moment. I love the wraith. I'm even coming round to John. He's so hapless and determined. And so cute with the wraith. And I've drafted a sequel to the wraith fic, too, which is going to be Rodney/John -- I veer violently between obscure and everybody's OTP.

Wot i recently done readed
-Racine, Phèdre (in French!)
-Euripides, Bacchae (in English, alas - I have no Greek -- I loved this)
-Turgenyev, Fathers and Sons (I absolutely loved this; it's one of the most exquisite novels I've ever read)
- Ursula LeGuin, Rocannon's World (interesting to read early LeGuin and to see how she developed the same themes over and over)

Recs, please! Oh, please!
I am especially in the need of: fic recs. Good lord, I haven't read a fic in literally weeks. I need SGA fic! I've been out of the loop of SGA since the start of the World Cup and that was the beginning of June! I was sidetracked into football fandom where I am becoming ever more firmly ensconced but it's not, for me, a fic-based fandom. Unlike SGA where, for me, the fanon is more important than the canon. So it's SGA fic I crave!

You know the kind of stuff I like: the kind of stuff written by Shalott, Cesperanza, Resonant, Liviapenn, Simonesimone. The kind of stuff written by Turgenyev, Adam Thorpe, David Mitchell, Ann-Marie MacDonald and Jane Austen. Lovely stuff, deep stuff, quirky stuff. Stuff with realistic dialogue. At the moment, I don't feel like crack, though. *gg*

And if there's any really outstanding Draco fic out there: I'll read that, too! :-)

This is a weird thing - I'm watching more SGA than I'm reading! There's some good wraith stuff in the new eps, btw.

And now I need to go to bed, because I feel most unwell. :(

I watched ep. 1 of series 3 (so-so) and Sateda (which I liked, esp. the 'I have feelings' dialogue -- very reminiscent of the urges dialogue in Wainthropp!). But I've not seen any other series 3: wot 1s do u recommend? And where does one download them? Well, I'll find 'em... :-)

And you watch more than you read? Interesting. What does this mean? That you are turning into a doggone *real* fan?? That the fic is gettin' worse?

There's one called, I think, Common Ground - maybe the latest one or the one before that... anyway, it's all about teh wraith and kinda John/Wraithy, which I thought you might find interesting... ;) I liked Sateda too, lots of fun! And there was one before the John/Wraith one which was all about Elizabeth, which I liked, because I'm really starting to like Elizabeth a lot, and I didn't at first.

What his all means, I'm not sure, except that I'm very partial to soothing, undemanding television at the moment (also enjoying House MD), and I'm reading very little except Doctor Who. And real books. I'm sure there's lots of great SGA fic around still, but I don't seem to have read any of it.

What is this House thing that everyone is posting about??

Eps sound good except what are their titles?? For downloading purposes? Common Ground sounds great! I am very John/wraithy at the moment. Heh, maybe this fic will actually be finished one day... It's crawling along 3 paragraphs per week.

P.S. About the wraith stuff. In Sateda, it was interesting that the wraith were strarting to be played by actors other than that one who always did the wraith hitherto. So they're starting to be *differentiated* wraith. Molto interessante.

I survived my first day back btw. I wore my uniform: dressed to kill is a helpful strategy, I find. And I thought of a) the Brazil/Argentina match a lot and b) of the horrible associate dean for student development sucking the horrible associate dean for resources (and former head of my department)'s cock. I have decided to take a lofty and amused attitude. Let's hope I can keep this up.

Yesyes - the wraith thing is *developing*!

Well done on surviving first day back. I found it a shock just going back after a week! But, all in all, it was probably a good thing because I deal with free time so incredibly badly. I was heading down the depression path, and at least now I'm forced to get out of bed in the morning.

Let's both be lofty and amused from now on. :)

You're right about the work-thing. I'm beginning the run-up for an academic term too (though not at your exalted level), and I bloody hate it. I know what's coming; I know exactly what these next 3-4 weeks entail; and I'm beset with fantasies of escape to - well anywhere really. Or even a tiny, debilitating-but-totally-safe accident. In fact last night (at the first new-intake party of the season, where the students all look like James Blunt *groan*) a colleague informed me she must have a small operation on one toe just after term begins. She then outlined her reading plans for the month's recuperation necessary. Man, I was GREEN!

The Bacchae! Wonderful, wonderful play. Dionysos SOOO rocks. He is Teh Hawt. He's one of my tutelary deities (the other's Loki of course), and All Slash is Under His Remit.

Sadly SGA isn't one of my things, and I'm just embarking on a huge amount of crack - or so I'm informed (Figwit on crack? NOOO!). So really - I'm not much use to you, am I? I did, however, have this daemonic thought about introducing Slash to the Child Ballads. That'll really annoy the Folkies!

I am totally not on an exalted level. I am very much un-exalted. The only thing exalted about me is my memory of the Brazil game. Ah... I wasn't so sure about Dionysos; I was more into the other dude, whatsisname, Dionysos's reluctant fuck buddy.

Do you see what the football fandom has done to you!?!? It's completely sucked out your brain!!!
Okay, maybe not completely. You might have some left. And I stress might.

Dudley fic!! Wow! I didn't even mention that in my post -- I didn't think I'd get any response... ! Wow, thank you! *scurries on over there* My Dudley fic is taking a back burner but it is still burning, and my recent football love has actually been rather good because Wayne Rooney allowed me to channel Dudley and vice versa, *g*. I'm amazed you remember!

I would love to rec stories, only I've come into fandom so late I feel that everything I find and love is everybody else's old hat. How about Hth's Alpha centauri? I love Ronon, and I became completely enamoured with that author when she devoted a whole section to the description of Satedan alphabet and naming customs (in chapter 7 "Romance").

Actually, I made that icon with you in mind. :-* I was thinking of getting an SGA one, and remembered the way you liked the angels, and was reminded that I like them a lot, too.

Do you enjoy reading AUs?

Do you want fic recs for fanfic stories? Or actual books? I've never watched SGA but I'm thinking perhaps I should. Writers that I admire in fandom seem to like it!

What's with all the SGA? Where are new football fics? You know, there I leave you alone for only about 3 weeks and this happens? *cries and whines and stomps her feet* Want Kaká and Cristiano! Pretty please! And also that Draco/Cristiano fic? Even more pretty please?

By the way - hope you had a wonderful vacation! :)

Oh, there's a vacation post somewhere in here... :-) But thank you for asking! Oh, but I was writing the SGA before you went away; you've just repressed it, m'dear! :-) And I need to write it and finish it, for various reasons.
