True and also sorry. Because it shows how excessive secrecy can backfire.

Yesterday our very old friend rang to say 'Happy Christmas'. He works for Reuters in Berlin. We chitchatted for 10 minutes and then I asked, idly:

"So, have you seen Lord of the Rings 3?"

"Oh yes. I saw the premiere."

"The premiere?? In Berlin??!"

"Oh yes. I was there on business. I interviewed Frodo."

".... 111."

After I recovered my powers of speech and struggled for normal tones of voice (still that damned secrecy), I ascertained the truth of this extraordinary revelation. Our friend who resides in a completely different realm in my brain from the one occupied by fannish lunacy did indeed interview Elijah Wood for 10 minutes for Reuters.

wtf

I could finally contain myself no longer and squealed, "Did you see Karl Urban?"

"Who?"

"Karl Urban! Eomer!!"

"He wasn't there."

*voice does somersaults* "Oh yes, he was. Could you have got me an autograph? A piece of his skin? A lock of hair?" (Yes, I said 'lock of hair'... My idiocy knows no bounds. The man *has* no locks of hair at the moment!!)

"Oh yes, I could have got anything from anyone. If you'd told me..."

*self screams inwardly*

Anyway, how about that?

I'm liek so totally weirded out.

Damn that stupid secrecy. I should have primed him!!! I must make sure that he's at the Bourne Supremacy Berlin premiere. Er, if they have one.

Oh, and to anyone who cares: The friend says that his ten minutes were blahblah and a waste, as these things often are, that PR women bustle about and say "you may have 10 minutes now" in irritating fashion, that he (interviewer) is bored and that he (interviewee) is bored but both have to be there and do that thing.

Bugger it all, I wish he'd talked to Karl.

"A lock of his hair," *dies laughing* And here your friend was in the hotness that is Elijah J. Wood (yup, still somewhat infatuated) for ten whole minutes? I would have had him bring me the boy. I'm also finding that the secrecy never pays. :(

I think I've missed out on some fun conversations and potential movie-buddies by keeping my fandom activities a deep, dark secret. I've loosened up a little bit, and found so many fangirls and boys that I would have loved to have known about two years ago. On the other hand though, I might have not made so many online friends if I had so many RL fandom friens.

I allow myself reckless Tolkien fannishness. It's safely close to nerdiness. So I will discourse on the name of Shelob's mother and the correct way to pronounce Isengard. But no word of drool re Eomer or Denethor will escape my lips... I will only say, 'Denethor was very well acted' -- and nothing of Eomer because um, he wasn't that well acted... And I don't let on that I know the names of the special effects crew and all the subsidiary orc extras...

Isn't it funny how the Tolkien fannishness is acceptable in a charmingly eccentric way? But if you're obsessed with the movies/actors you're a nut? At least now I know two people I can play the LOTR-trivia game with and not be embarrassed that I know the name of JRD's stunt double!

And re: Eomer, even after the movies, most people are likely to say who? *g*

oh dear! i guess after 3 years, there really is no interesting question left to ask Lij, especially since it's an ROTK promo tour, and your friend couldn't ask him about what he's been up to since LOTR or whether he's dating Dom ... hah!

now see, if your friend had known you're a Karl fan and hunted him down at the press conference thing, he could have asked Karl for a lock of hair and it would have been, er, interesting to see his reaction.

my rl friends know i'm an LOTR fan, but probably not the extent.

Yes, I must let on more. Especially as to the principals of my lust. I have now primed him (Karl! John!) but what use is that after the end of the trilogial premieres?

Ah well.

Eeeek, Siamese icons!!!! *hides behind Shahrukh*

Now, Shahrukh/Orlando -- there'd be an interesting crossover. *ponders luring-readers-into-Bollywood-via-smut fic*

And thanks for the rec! No, I hadn't seen it but I have downloaded it! It may be a few weeks before I get to read it what with rl holidays and so forth.

*smoochiepoos*
