I took t'small son to London for the day and had a wonderful time. Highlight: going to Carluccio's near Oxford Circus and having 'children's coffee' (thick hot chocolate served in an espresso cup).

We entered a bookshop and before I knew it, I had purchased four books. Two of them are by Mary Renault, because everyone's been swooning on about her slashy Alexander. And then my eye fell on a pile of the new David Mitchell novels lying next to the till, and I got heart palpitations.

Currently, there are only two (non-fanfic) authors who give me palpitations and whose books I have to buy in hardback because I simply cannot wait for the paperback and despite hating to read or shelve hardbacks -- and they are Ann-Marie MacDonald and David Mitchell.

On the train down, I started doing a narratological analysis of [livejournal.com profile] azewewish's "In the Name of Research" and [livejournal.com profile] novanumbernine's "Bordertown". It is very interesting, actually, and even more rewarding than I had expected. I'm using Genette's terms and applying them systematically, and am about 1/3 of the way through. It's helping me come to grips with the narratological concepts, and it's also very interesting to read fic without evaluating. Analysis is not like criticism or beta; it's more about describing than prescribing or judging. And I'm glad I happened to start out with two very different authors and very different styles. Will post my analysis when I'm through!

Not much else to report except that I'm feeling rather cheerful, will rent a romantic comedy from Blockbuster tonight (despite considerable familial resistance) and am still sitting about unshowered and undressed at 2.47 pm! Heh.

But [livejournal.com profile] blythely thinks I look like Kajol so all must be right with the world.

Ooh, must add David Mitchell to my library list. I hope he's available here. I'm trying not to buy so many books, so am making use of our wonderful library system. The wait can be a bit long for new or popular books though- I'm 795th in line for The DaVinci Code out of 807! But Bel Canto is finally on hold for me- I can't wait to read it!

What is the Da Vinci Code?

And I am ridiculous. Having bought the David Mitchell I'm now too scared to read it in case it doesn't live up to expectations.

I can't remember who the author is off the top of my head, but it seems everyone is reading it. Some sort of biblical archaeological thriller. I put in for it at the library and am 797th on the list!

I have very mixed feelings over the Alexander books. I shall not comment further, so as not to unduly influence you.

Cordelia: when have you not had mixed feelings about anything? When have you not responded with muted alertness to anything I have oozed on about?

Can't wait to talk about these with you!!!! *hurries off to read*

I have to respond with muted alert to the accusation that I respond with muted alert. I do not always respond with muted alert. In fact, just the other day, you were telling me off for not responding to your lj at all. So here I am responding, and you are telling me off for it!

Usually I either don't respond, or I do respond and disagree with you. This mixed feelings expressed through a state of muted alertness is a new phase.

Just read the books so we can debate.

I have rearranged my books recently, and one of the bookcases has an armchair pushed up against it, so that the bottom shelf is hidden by the arm. This shelf has been reserved for books that I am ashamed to own. The Alexander books have taken up their rightful place down there; they were not even saved by containing the most romantic scene of all time. They have a lovely aftertaste though.

Oh, just read them.

I didn't mean the muted alert as a criticism or affront! No!!! I meant it as a good thing!! I love the muted alert!! (Now I'm not sure what I meant by 'muted alert'; having just typed it four times it doesn't even seem to have any grammatical logic.)
