So, is there anything I've missed? Any rants? Kerfuffles? Returns from the departed, a la [livejournal.com profile] zarah5? Departures of the stomping kind? Cute icons? Above all, any good fics???

Oh, and speaking of which: here's my rec: [livejournal.com profile] helenish's fantastic Reparations series, and it's still unfinished so will continue to delight! It's Harry Potter and, as you know, I'm no HP fan (really) and only rec or read if it's absolutely fabulous. And this one is. Crackling prose, characterisations that cut like blades, just brilliant.

On the other hand, what a disappointment Mary Renault is proving! I'm reading Fire from Heaven and yes, it's slashy, and yes, it's sensual but also yes, its prose clonks along like a pair of mismatched wooden clogs and yes, it does not manage to immerse me into any kind of story-world (which is the least I would expect from historical fiction)and yes, its plotting confuses - who are all these people and why are names dropped and forgotten and taken up again... It's as chaotic as trying to follow Ned Kelly the movie. Well, I'll plod on for a bit and I did also buy the next one The Persian Boy, but slashiness doeth not redeem bad!fic. Well, all right: okay!fic.

One thing about writing as well as reading: there's always some redeeming lesson to take away from absolutely everything. :-)

What have you missed? Oh, there's been a kerfuffle, because someone set up a thread where you could anonymously say who you had a crush on in the fandom, and this made some people bitter so they set up a thread where you could go to bitch about how much you hated anyone more popular than you, and some people generally acted like big wankers, and some people's feelings got hurt, and it's just all been a bit like the school playground really.

I haven't got anything to rec, because I can't concentrate on anything for more than 3 minutes, and have descended into a state of sludginess where all I can do it play solitaire, and I even am rubbish at that.

Mary Renault will forever have a place on my Big Journey of Slash, but I still skipped about half the book because it was dull.

This is only tangentially related--I was on a long car trip over the weekend and just for a laugh I checked out "Three Weeks in Paris" by Barbara Taylor Bradford (whom I never read). omg! Clunky prose galore!! If one more "brow lifted" of its own accord I was going to wreck the car...dark brows lifted, redgold brows lifted; when they didn't lift they arched!! ACK!*stab* I guess I should have known what I was in for, but actually I was hoping for hot sex to take my mind off the monotony of the highway.

*cackles*

p.139 of Fire From Heaven has two raised eyebrows alone:

The King met his look and raised his eyebrows.

Philotas raised his brows, but failed to catch Ptolemy's eye.

Mwuahhh. Fancy us both noticing the bleeding lifted brows!!!

I hab a cobd

There was much wank and kerfuffle in the crush and hate threads. [livejournal.com profile] shaenie's writing angsty Elijah and Billy, which is fabulous as usual. I'm gonna put up some other recs as soon as I get the energy. Should be working. Blah.

Oh, I'm sorry you're not liking the Mary Renault. It was only a few weeks ago that I first heard someone be critical of her and after my initial shock, I thought, well yes, she can be vague and confusing, but I kind of like that. I suppose it adds an aura of mystery for me. :) As to the clunky prose, it makes it all seem rather antique-y. You may like The Persian Boy better- it seems to be the better-liked of the two, although I still tend to favor Fire from Heaven because of my Hephaistion-crush-that-will-not-go-away!

I was so disappointed with Mary Renault (!) that I re-discovered slash, to wit Fearless Diva's HP 'Tissue of Silver' and omg. So it was worth going off Renault just for that.

Oh, "Tissue of Silver" is on my very long to-read list. Maybe I'll bump it towards the top!
