lobelia321: (irreverent + sensible)

Okay, not quite: Shropshire, actually.

But first: my holiday. It was absolutely glorious. Started out with marital strife, then came B&B, castle and church and marital talking and other ways of harmonising, and then came Herefordshire which is absolutely gorgeous. The weather was glorious (all of a sudden!), the company a delight, the children happy, the food delicious, the carvings on the litle church of Kilbeck wonderful, including a carving of a Sheela-na-gig. Yes! *waves at [livejournal.com profile] childeproof!

I was so surprised; I had thought that name was invented for LJ. But it's a name for an apotropaic female figure who wards off evil, and the one I saw was just a hoot: bug eyes, mad mouth and hands spread around her pudenda showing her cunt to the world! i luffd her

Secondly:

Yes, I know, you're all rolling your eyes and saying, 'well, it was just a matter of time.' But I didn't see it coming! The bunny caught me unawares in Ludlow, making me think it was a Dom/Karl bunny. Then that didn't seem to go anywhere and I thought, 'I'm doing too many Dom/Karls, it's gettin' old'; so I tried the bunny on Dom/Orli but that didn't fit, either. I cast about for other suitables within Lotrips but nothing really clicked until, argh, I just, for a lark, had a go with HP and

omg argh ack

it worked. The plot started flowing, and more plot elements sprouted like butterflies, and before I knew it, I was mentally stabbing the self and thinking 'oh no oh no, this is not happening'.

*cackles and feels insane*

Okay, now for the practicalities:

What do I know about HP fandom? A handful of fics and 4 items of source material, read years ago.

What do I need to know? Do I need to re-read JKR? Do I need to *gulp* go and buy Order of the Whatsit? Do I need to bone up on fanon?

And where do I post this thing? What yahoo groups and LJ communities cater to this madness?

At the moment, I've written 3 acts of this fic (all in my head, you understand -- it was a family holiday, after all!) and my hunch is: zip through a mega-fast re-read of books 1-4, ignore Order of the Fuck, ignore fanon, cheerfully forge ahead with own completely lunatic version of HP-verse.

Any thoughtlets???

Post it here, for the mother of pete! I want to read it!

And I tend to ignore OotP at will as well.

Good, will do. Once finished. Wrote 2 pages of it today. It's threatening to go the way of all HP fic: long.

Your plan sounds fine to me! Not to mention... Order of the Fuck -- there you go: you've got a title!

Glad you had such a nice holiday, and the Sheela-na-gig sounded lovely!

Is he? Goodness me, I didn't realise! I saw him at that Collectormania thing last year or whenever it was. He looked about 10. ;)

He actually doesn't look too bad in this picture although he is not my Draco. I'm still pondering which actor does look like my Draco. Mackenzie Crook comes closest, *ggg*.

*cackles at idea that this should be my title!*

No, I have my title. Amazingly. It's only slightly less cheesy than the above and I googled it and couldn't believe that it had not actually been used before by myriad other slashers. But apparently I am to be first in cheese-territory.

okay, I'm probably not the right person to counsel you on the whole canon-fanon business, but your plan sounds good - and you can always claim you conceived of it pre OotP (or F, if you prefer), which is a perfectly legitimate way to avoid stories that have conflicts with current canon.

and, yeah, ignore fanon. I really adore reading stories that aren't all about the boring boring crapola I've had to read ten thousand times. I mean, if I read another Neville-in-the-greenhouse story my eyeballs might fall out of my head from rolling them, and yet! yet! in my current story, where's Neville? in the goddam greenhouse, that's right. Make your own shit up. We like that.

Anyhow, as [livejournal.com profile] throughadoor once said, "I've read all five books, and that's all I needed, last I checked, to be part of the fandom." And four out of five ain't bad.

also, yeah, there is no centralized archive or anything sensible like that - I mean, it's HP! - just post in your LJ for the enjoyment of your pervy friends, say I.

um, but, obviously, I'm chillin' on the outskirts of the fandom, so what do I know?

Oh, you mean there's a whole fanon *etiquette* on how to avoid knowledge of the canon? Or to claim such? So if in the year 2009 I come up with another bunny, I can 'claim' that it was conceived in 1999??? Oh, the highways and byways of HP-dom! Hahahah.

if I read another Neville-in-the-greenhouse story
*laughs incredibly hard*

I didn't even *know* that was a stereotype! Bwuahahha. And where do you put him? *laughs even harder*

Oh dear, *wipes eyes*, I do love fanon.

just post in your LJ for the enjoyment of your pervy friends, say I.

But you see, I am an irredeemable fb slut and any means of maximising my quantitative input will be glomped on!

Oh, you *are*?

oh, ps.

Order of the Fuck isn't actually bad. Or, okay, it's a little annoying, and I'm not sure I could stand to reread it, but it's a fast page-turner, the first time through. Harry shouts a LOT, and proceeds to have the fucking worst first relationship with a girl on the biggest rebound of all time, and does a lot of dumb stuff that makes you wonder if he was dropped on his head as a child. Still, it's a fast read, and Ginny nails, like, five guys, if that's your deal.

Well, I've read several plot summaries on the internet so that'll have to do me. The book is just so stupidly heavy; I can't be lugging that about with me. I have a mega-kilogram library bag as it is, crammed full of narratological tomes. And I can't be seen reading it in public, nor even in the family, come to think of it -- I will be mocked mercilessly. I'll have to wrap it in a neutral brown cover, risking being taken for a surreptitious reader of porn.

Sounds like a plan to me. And I shouldn't worry too much about canon and fanon because frankly everyone in HP has their own version anyway. I really look forward to yours. And if you want someone to bounce HPness off, you know where to find me!

I am still inordinately thrilled about this, you know.

Duh me, reading your posts backwards, so came at the Sheela na Gig photo before your account of it. I've never seen such a well-preserved one, though I tend to look them up wherever I go. In Ireland, they're mostly outdoors, having been moved out of churches by indignant priests. I'm very fond of one in a ruined castle not far from where I grew up, a castle which has always been passed down through the women of the family. You can get in to see her if you manage to wrangle the key off the grumpy weirdo on the pub next door and bring enough ladders and torches and packets of biscuits to see you up three floors.

Some day I'll get round to making a proper Sheela icon, when I'm finished the overdue journal article which is currently killing my brain.

Go you with HP. I've had occasional leanings in that direction myself, but was stymied - possibly stupidly - by my total ignorance of the fandom, though I have read

Did this get cut off at the end? You say that you have 'read' and then nothing...??

but was stymied - possibly stupidly - by my total ignorance of the fandom,
I have gleaned minimal info about the fandom - to the extent that I now know they have a manly men/boy divide just like we do, and they have weirdo pairings, even weirder than lotrips (which endears them to me -- I mean: squid/squib!!!), and they write looooong fics. There are also about a million of them; it's like a teeming ant colony.

And what do you mean, you have had leanings???
