Do you know the fabulous Hoot/Todd stories by [livejournal.com profile] stewardess_lotr? They were recced by [livejournal.com profile] eyebrowofdoom and oh my, are they breathtakingly addictive. BHD fandom but don't worry if you neither like nor know that film. And Stewardess so deliciously puts [Bana/Bloom] in square brackets in her pairings rubric.

And it's nice to read some gritty, real, manly and at the same time so totally schmoopy fic after all those forays into fantasy!canon I've been lured into recently.

Taking my cue from Stewardess, I wish to offer a mini-musing on fps and rps. How, exactly, do we determine what's what? Stewardess calls her Hoot/Todd series 'fps' because none of it is based on anything real. Okay: if it were Bana/Bloom, it would, quite obviously, be rps. But Hoot/Todd in movieverse makes it fps. Except that the movie is based on a real story with real characters named Hoot and Todd. So does that make the fics rps, after all? I don' t think so because it's not the *real* Hoot/Todd that Stewardess is writing about. She explicitly states that her pairing is 'Hoot/Todd [Bana/Bloom]': it is Hoot'n'Todd *as portrayed by* Bana'n'Bloom in the movie BHD. Had Stewardess done research on the rl characters and found photos (e.g. scanned them in from the book upon which the movie script is based), that would have made her Hoot'n'Todd rps.

Complicated? Well, it's one of those wonderful duck-rabbit intertwinings that makes fandom so interesting for me. The way that the rps (hot actors) shimmers through the fps (gritty action soldiers). The way that Bana/Bloom effortlessly moves from Hoot/Todd to Hector/Paris, and back again. (Because, unsurprisingly, Stewardess writes Hector/Paris, too.) The way that movement back and forth makes total sense in the world of fanfic.

So what do you think? What makes fps fps, and what makes rps rps? And is Shakespeare's "King Henry V", technically speaking, rpf (real person fiction because well, slash it ain't)?

And what of Lucifer/God fic? rps? fps??

well, 'hoot' isn't a real person - he's an amalgamation of several different delta force soldiers apparently. another person in the movies who isn't really real is ewan mcgregor's character, grimes. apparently the person he portrays committed a crime of some sort and the army didn't want his name bandied about, so they changed it to grimes.

as well, there were loads of interviews and tv specials which came out around the time of the movie, most significant ones which interviewed the actually rangers and delta forces who were involved in the incident. i remember matt eversmann saying he was shocked they picked someone so outrageously handsome to play him, and he said the whole sitting about being patriotic and altruistic, going on about making a difference is just Hollywood; no one in the army did that sort of thing. it was just a job to them.

so i think stewardess' stories are fps - they are based on characters in a movie.

i would consider king henry v is rpf, fiction based on a real person, as is hildalgo is rhf - fiction, based on a real horse. Anything, which is based on real events or person, but takes liberties with the actual facts, is sort of fictitious to me. one good example is the movie selena which starred j.lo. based on the real person, selena quintanilla. no one knows for sure what she said when she sat in a truck with her boyfriend. no one knows for sure what exactly went down between her and her manager before her manager shot her. so that movie i would consider rpf - real person fiction.

well, i didn't want anyone to think that hidalgo is rhf - fiction based on raunchy hobbits ... or something.

Actually, Hoot isn't a real person. He's a conglomeration of a few different real life soldiers, both Delta & Ranger. *smiles* So, he's totally made up.

And, um, yes. Her series=<33333333.

Hmm. I've been wondering this after falling on Band of Brothers tv series (haven't read the book). When I write about Winters, I really don't write about the real person but the actor, Damian Lewis, playing Winters. When I started writing, it didn't even occur to me that the characters are based on real people.

On the other hand, the tv series is already a dramatized version about certain events of WWII, making it sort of RPS fiction, too. So am I writing fanfiction about someone else's fanfiction? Interesting!

I'm going to link this to [livejournal.com profile] camp_toccoa, if you don't mind.

Yes, this was a topic of much discussion back in the day when we started writing Band of Brothers slash. Real men, portrayed by actors as themselves. In most cases I think, a retelling of real events is still fictionalized, making the characters mostly fictional as well. Same dilemma with Memphis Belle, although the movie made it easy for me by changing everyone's names. I did however, use the real life story in my research and in building some of my characters. So maybe it's an RPS/FPS hybrid?
