it's good to rec
Apr. 29th, 2004 09:21 pmFics I have enjoyed in recent times:
Lord of Misrule by

Lotfips. A very erotic fps about my one and only Lotr OTP: Gimli/Legolas. It's a bit movie-versish (and I'm never overly fond of a blondLegolas; in my world, his hair is pitch black) but it's so gorgeous that who cares. Perfect pacing, wonderfully drawn out tension, and just a long hot bath in true slashiness. Beautiful settings, too.
In irritation he tapped out his pipe, emptying the bowl, and kicked the ashes over the edge. Damn Legolas. He would be getting no sleep tonight, that much was certain. He replayed the conversation in his head. What had he said to set the Elf off so? And why did it seem to happen all the time now? If Legolas had tired of his company, why did he continue to seek him out? After all, he had been quietly sitting out here, enjoying his pipe, when Legolas and his moodiness had disrupted his peace. Damn the Elf.

Aitchpee. Harry is turned into a frog. Need I say more? The prose style is simply delightful: short sentences, every word sharp and precise, every paragraph a nugget of sexiness (remember Gertrude Stein? Sentences are not emotional, paragraphs are.). Wonderfully whittled down to the basics. And funny! And, despite the pairing, manly through and through.
There was a whoosh of air, and Potter disappeared. Someone gasped in the silence.
Snape walked over to where the boy had been. In his place was a pile of clothing. Sitting on top of it, blinking through a pair of miniaturized spectacles, was a large green frog.
"Quidditch," said the frog.
Hoot/Todd Blackburn series by

BHD. Now, this one is so manly it makes the screen sweat. (Except that they do take showers an awful lot and worry about cleanliness but then they're American, bless them.) The prose packs a punch and I was totally hooked from chapters 1-10 (I drifted a bit after that: there was a plot!). Hot, hot, hot, and very sweet as well.
It was the fucking kid again. He’d gotten in Hoot’s face in the mess, and now the punk was coming into the latrine just as Hoot went into a stall to take a shit.
And
resonant8 has posted her Transfigurations DVD-commentary and I am its abject slave and adorer. It is a fascinating insight into how my top-ten fanfic of all time evah was conceived and written, and a lovely example of writer/beta co-operation which humbles me (because I tend to be *so* touchy about beta).
In other news, my HP obsession deepens day by day in most disturbing fashion. My HP!Sue is (currently) Draco which came as a surprise to me but I'm going with the flow and it's taking me down some very weird alleyways. I have to say, in HP fanon is so very strong -- perhaps because I am so bored by its canon. If blond!fanon-Legolas or pointy-eared-Frodo get on my nerves, I can always take canon-Tolkien to hand, but JKR... oh dear, she doesn't *know* her own canon. But weird pairing possibilities abound and I'm revelling in that. Also, the magic is fun! Writing the magic is just super, super fun -- but I have to try so hard not to fanonise it.
Also, HP has its own version of tinhattery. And guess what, it's possibly even worse than ours. People actually start to discuss JKR's sitcommish inventions as if they were *real*. They get very excited about intricate plot details. I'm using sitcommish in the sense of sitcoms with fans who puzzle over the arcane meanings of words, names or episodes when the sitcom writers themselves wouldn't have a clue because they were on speed while they penned the thing. Not every author is an obsessed lunatic like JRRT, and JKR certainly is not. Her books are full of canon holes, and that's what makes the fanon so interesting (to me, anyway) -- it tries to fill in those holes.
But one thing is for certain: they can certainly be canon-mad over there in HP land. Except for some. *grins at those some*
Ah, the days of wanton canon ignoring and rampant Wainthropp madness. Where is canon-resistrix number one aka
badgermonkey when needed?

And Draco fic morphing into mini-epic. But then, what else is new? Am casting round for betas at the moment. I am so pleased you like my Crook!Draco!!!!

Date: 2004-05-04 07:08 pm (UTC)*laughs and sputters* Oh, the mental images.
And yes, this is my Gimli, too, and my Legolas as well, because he's the Legolas that got me thinking that *my* Legolas was really an elven version of Karl May's Winnetou but nobody non-German ever knows what I'm talking about so *sob*. But I was imprinted by that G/L, I think, and am forever marked.
Hey, nice icon. *laughs*
