author treasure nr.1
Jul. 11th, 2002 11:00 pmThere has been a bit of a tendency in LJ-land recently to voice negative opinions of fics, that is, people saying what they don't like about a fic.
Being the contrary person that I am, I thought I would start a little counter-balancing series of positive posts, saying what I really appreciate about various authors' fics.
I have an rl and all but I will try to post at least one of these every day in no particular order, and I will call them author treasures. :-)
Note: I have deliberately disabled comments because I don't want any agreements or disagreements, and I certainly don't intend these as flattery nor to be about the authors themselves (just about their fics) so I don't want any thank-yous from authors here. The best thank-yous are: more fics, *g*! And if keen on commenting: do start your own author treasures (or whatever you want to call them).
I am starting with

Author treasure nr. 1
Why I like Jen's fics
I like Jen's fics because they are so careful with words. They really pay attention to words and the way words fit together and the rhythm of sentences and paragraphs. I also like the way they pay attention to the characters, the way Jen thinks and thinks about her Boys (and Men) and the way she allows herself to listen to them. I know that you can't really listen to fictional creatures as such but the metaphor makes absolute sense to me: you have sort of to give up control and "capture" something, rather than think of it in terms of making or mastering it.
Jen's fics have inspired me to be more creative with words and to liberate language a little. They've also inspired me not to be afraid to think in terms of big concepts and conflicts when writing these people, and by 'big' I mean things like her beauty, pain and so forth, important basic key concepts around which entire series can revolve. So that the fic isn't only about person x and person y but the conflicts and relationships among entire concepts that may be embodied by person x and person y.
I could go on but I want to keep these short and manageable, *g*.
