About a thousand HP fans have invaded my LJ in a rather delightful way and my pathetic excuse of having been only lurking in HP and sort of writing fic on the side, ahem, has been exposed for the flimsy self-delusion it always was because, ack, I've been linked on the [livejournal.com profile] daily_snitch! *is torn between preening and cackling but, in order to insert adverb, decides to preen cacklingly*

Update on my fucked real life:

English universities enjoy something called a quinquennial QAA visit (quality audit something or other); government inspectors come in and certify that the uni is sectionable or otherwise. So, our uni was the first and only one so far not to get an automatic 'pass' by these inspectors and alas, they are right. Management has reacted with predictable kneejerk idiocy, passing the buck immediately onto the individual departments. We have not been 'implementing' their policies where the entire QAA report was all about the inadequacies of said policies to begin with! *tears out hair*

Also, the management has now told us that we are not allowed to run any degrees next academic year. None. Zero. No students. No raison d'etre, in other words. Fast route to redundancy. Low recruitment = no money = no support from the uni. And my institution gives not a fig about academic significance, research or quality of teaching.

*gnashes teeth*

So, I'm not feeling too great. Also, I wasn't shortlisted for that job I applied for and there hasn't been another one. Bugger.

And Greece? &@$£!!??? Well, it's "footballing history". But honestly, they have a German coach and they play a German game: stolid, boring, unsparkling, buggering about with the offside rule, playing it safe once they have their one pathetic goal, generally indistinguishable one from the other.

Ah, Ronaldo! Oh, the glory of those tears!

Nobody has any money. Remember: universities are not private in the UK.

Well, I think there may be some others but basically, the whole place is imploding. It's in fucking free fall.

Well, of course, the buck always gets passed. And it's usually to the poor souls trying to implement policies that were fucked up to begin with. How aggravating! And how does not running any degrees help anything? Of course, I have zero knowledge about how your system works, but it would seem logical that a university would be interested in getting more, not fewer students. *tears some hair out on your behalf*

And the HP-er's have reeled you in. Ha!

Indeed. They could be getting some fees as opposed to no fees. Oh, it's a stupid complicated business but it basically boils down to this: lack of leadership, lack of vision, timidity of management.

Although I felt really sad for Portugal's players and fans (I know how they must have felt, because Greece's been there in the past), I celebrated Otto Rehhagel's and the Greek players' victory. The cup doesn't go to the team that plays the most spectacular game, but to the team that has taken less goals. And Greece's defense was amazing.
Besides, the first time they won Portugal they got 2 goals in. After winning far superior teams, like France and Czech, I didn't have a doubt that they could win Portugal for a second time.

Yes, but Greece played so *boringly*!!! I don't like those boring defensive games. They have no sparkle! And that Rehagel is just a stupid German drilling machine.

Well, if you ever get a mad, devil-may-care usrge to teach GCSE Media Studies (Watch videos! Piss about with digital cameras! Explain what the word 'genre' means 50,000 times!) you know where to come. I could be your boss! (Note: I am not, actually, anyone's boss. But I like to pretend.)

'tis true, the education system is severely fucked up, ruled over by idiots (those who can, do. Those who can't teach. Those who can't teach, inspect) and suffering from a chronic lack of money and suffocation by red tape.

And get you, talking about the offside rule like you know what it means!

*loves this!!!* Alas, so true, too.

And I do so know what the offside rule means! And anyway, the commentators (who were not GaryAlan but some other faceless talk-me-through-the-match peoploids) said so.

hey - arrived via ms. [livejournal.com profile] childeproof who keeps pimping your interesting meta-discussions to me. :)

If it would cheer you up in post-Gary, post-Alan, post-QAA days, a Figo/Ronaldo fic just went up at [livejournal.com profile] footballslash, featuring Tortured!Figo and InscrutableOrJustBlank?!Ronaldo. Sex in the showers, post-match angst and some discussion of midfield tactics - everything you want in a football fic.

and I agree with you about Greece. Plus, their slash potential was *low*.

Greece's slash potential was *phenomenally* low! I couldn't even tell them all apart; they were just too generic.

I entirely feel for you re. job situation. Have been thinking myself about what else I could conceivably do for a living, after I leave mine at the end of the year to get a life.

On a cheerier note, yes, those tears were great fun. His little earrings got all wet. The football, on the other hand, sucked, apart from the one-man Figo-cented pitch invasion.

You're giving up academe...? *gulps* So what are you going to do?? Are you going back to the home across the sea? (Or was that the other way round: the job across the sea?)

The job's across the sea. Confusingly, in my native country, though England's been home for a long time now. No, am hoping to find an academic job here, but if not will become bus conductor/pimp/wiccan counsellor.

On the other hand, have had a brush with morality (tests, funny heart) and it's amazing how that clears the mind...
