Some more HP recs
Jul. 20th, 2004 09:15 amHarry Potter fanon I have enjoyed recently:
A Wizard of the Shining World by
pingviini (Penguin).
Something tingled in me when I read the pairing Gilderoy Lockhart/Lucius Malfoy, and I was not disappointed. This is why I love rare pairings: the ferreting out of snatches of canon, twisted and plaited anew to make something surprising but at the same time: 'of course'! I loved the prose and the tightness of the plotting and the way things were left unspoken at the end. And to find things that are shared by both Gilderoy and Lucius was just so very satisfying.
An Elegant Man, by
icarusancalion.
Percy Wesley/Lucius Malfoy. Lovely, slow build-up and a totally believable climax and dénouement which is wonderful, given the weirdness of the pairing -- but then suddenly, I found myself thinking: no, not weird at all, totally obvious. Lush Victorianesque settings and on-the-edge dialogue.
Know Your Enemy, by
donnaimmaculata.
Great fun Harry/Ron first-time -- or is that Crabbe/Goyle? Polyjuiced into ugly but uncannily mature oafs, Harry/Crabbe and Ron/Goyle find themselves together in a cupboard.
Sweetums, by
cursescar (Aspen).
Dudley Dursley/Harry Potter. This one's grown on me. I read it some time ago and thought 'nice' but it's kept creeping up on me since. It's one of the very rare fics that actually humanise Dudley. And it's sort of innocent.
Dark Side of Light, by
mistful (Maya).
Difficult to say I "enjoyed" this fic because it is too dark and wrenching for pure pleasure but it had me glued to the screen in breathless anticipation of the next plot twist and the next turn of the emotional knife in my heart. Draco is in Azkaban; Harry comes to visit. It's written in radio-play style dialogue only, with minimal stage directions, and was almost physical in its effect on me. An extraordinary tour de force: psychological, political, ethical. I was stunned by it.

Date: 2004-07-20 09:51 am (UTC)You know, I've read about 3 HP fics since forever, but I'm reading all your recs, and might even be kind of enjoying this fandom. Wait, did I say that out loud?

Oh, the responsibility...
But it's nice, isn't it, to find someone who shares your fic-taste? I used to get all my recs from
Yes, and you did say that out loud. I'm enjoying the fanon -- in fact, I'm adoring it. Not so sure about the actual fandom *just yet*. I've met some nice people but there are also a lot of dogmatists out there.
