where is the lj love? or, techie nightmares

Is anyone else having problems with the new LJ layout? thejennabides implied that you were.

These days the LJ love is gone. Because I can't just dip in and out anymore. I used to be able to have a quick look at my Friends page and leave a few comments. Fun! Now if I make one tiny comment, if I but post an apostrophe, I have to wait for the whole bloody page of that post and all of its other comments to load. This can take up to 3 or 4 bloody minutes! If I see a post that has more than 10 comments already, I won't comment half the time because the more comments, the longer the stupid page takes to load. If I click on the 'reply' link at the bottom of an email: same thing! Endless wait!

It's as if I were listening to someone on the phone (lurking) but every time I wanted to reply, even if only to say "U-huh" (commenting), the line would go crackle, crackle, crackle for 3 minutes. Where is the joy in that? LJ is for being interactive!!!

So I don't comment, I don't reply to comments, it's annoying and I am annoyed. I asked an FAQ on LJ and they explained that in order to conserve bandwidth they eliminated that in-between holding page (where it said 'if you want to view comments, click here'). I loved that page!!!!

I have an iMac, bought in 1998. It's been upgraded to OS 8.6. I have Internet Explorer version 5.1 and Netscape version 4.0. I spent 100 pounds on the last upgrade.

Does anyone have any bright ideas on how to get around this problem? I've turned off all my pictures but so far, no difference.

Bleurgh.

I won't disable the comments function on this post at the risk of spooking thejennabides (*grins*) and also because I need, need, need those bright ideas!

Hm, this is not what you'll want to hear, but,

There were changes in lj's layout, concerning the comments? Recently? *puzzled and clueless* All looks as always to me.

Now that I've thought about it more, do you mean the "when I read a post on its page with all the other comments, only a little box opens for me to write in instead of a new page" bit?

I usually right-click, and open the comment page in a new window, where the other comments aren't displayed. I know Mac users don't right-click, but isn't there an equivalent that lets you open links in new pages of their own?

Still not feeling very helpful. :-/

The new comments box is only part of it. I can't use that at all. I click on the link at the bottom. But once I've posted my comment, I'm zapped back to the page full of comments. Aren't you? (I used to be zapped to a page that just said 'Your comment has been successfully posted. Click here to view it.' Did you not have that?)

Yes, you're right. I didn't give that much thought. I don't wait to see the whole comment page load, usually; just check that my comment was posted and then close the page again. :-/

I have to wait for the page to load because my screen freezes up while it loads and I can't do anything else. Grr.
