Thank you so much, everyone who responded to my plea for fic recs. I netted some real goodies. Over the past three days, I have been gorging myself on fic and am now woefully behind in my feedback! I still haven't tackled the long, long ones yet but just wanted to say a collective 'thank you'! I will do a little passing-on-the-reccage post of my own in the next few days... if I get round to it! And if LJ lets me, grr.

At the moment I am reading a fic by Julad which stems from a mysterious fandom that I cannot locate. It has a Brian Kenney in it, and a Justin (but it doesn't seem to be the Nsync-Justin), and something to do with advertising. Reading fanfic as orig has a special something about it!

Brian Kinney. It's American Queer as Folk. I LOVE Justin and Brian! <3 *points to icon*

So, um, who's who in the icon?

The great thing about Julad's writing is that you don't need to know the fandom nor recognise the people. Her characterisation will draw you in all by itself!

ROTFL...

Queer as Folk US...it might help to have a tad bit of info on the typical characteristics of Brian and Justin, but I'm pretty sure it might actually come through in the fic...did you ever watch the UK version? The plot is pretty much the exact same in the first few eps except that down the line the British version gets much, much grimmer...and the American one soapier...which is why they're heading for a fifth season.

the same name phenomenon is frustrating...i remember seeing a brian/justin and all i could think of was...that's one of the less popular NSYNC/BSB Xovers :-)

What's BSB? *flails under fandom overdose*

I never watched Queer as Folk. Somehow I baulked at it. Too gay, I guess. Though usually I crave the gay. But when it comes down to it, the gay is a poor substitute for the slash.

I almost guessed this, though, because there are overt references to something resembling a gay community and anonymous fucks. These things do not normally crop up in fanfic which exists in a heady realm of men struggling with their sexuality, sleeping with anonymous pick-ups only when angsting about unavailable loves-of-their-lives, and preferring the option of 'I can't help whom I love but I am consumed by it' to the option of 'I am part of a social nexus of men who go under the late 20th c. category of "gay"'.

Back Street Boys...Justin Timberlake/Brian Litrell...

it is *very, very* gay in an in your face, anti-westablishment sort of way. especially brian is rabidly anti-domesticity or even boyfriends...justin, who has effectively moved in with him and is, for all intents and purposes his boyfriend, defines himself to one of brian's tricks whom he meets at the door as he's leaving the apartment as "i'm the guy he fucks more than once."

i'm not too much into QAF fanfic (it's like it doesn't *need* any), but the dynamic in the show is fascinating...you have the age fuck (justin's in high school when he first meets brian who's 29 at the time) and the clashing views on relationships (justin wants romance and stability and assurances while brian fucks as many men as he possibly can and will not commit to anyone for anything).

through the show justin does *not* tame brian and shows him love...instead, he influences justin to also fuck around. the trust/commitment issue is pretty much completely diovorced from the sex, sth very opposite to the slash tropes (see the great post on hp_fictalk!). yet over time justinm begins to get under brian's skin all the same and brian ends up making room for justin in his life...allbeit within a very unconcentional take on relationships and cohabitation...

one of the things i like about the show (and julad's story) is the way this mutual growth and power negotiation is played out between the two...
