It's been anticipated but when it does finally come, it is a shock. Art History has been axed from my university.

I feel bruised. What to say?

I looked up my contract last night. It says they have to give me three months' notice. Everything is uncertain.

Here's a wonderful painting by Anselm Feuerbach as consolation:

Anselm Feuerbach, Abschied der Medea (Medea's Farewell), 1870, Neue Pinakothek, Munich

Oh hell! What a horrible thing to happen (especially at Festive Season) even if expected: it is always a shock when reality follows through.

Hope there is a good solution to this, a silver lining just waiting to be found: wish I could nip forward a year and see you looking back and saying, "Well, if that hadn't happened ..."

Hope everything clarifies itself as soon as possible: meanwhile, shall think good things in your direction.

Bastards! Wow. I'm so sorry to hear that. You deserve better in fact you deserve to be paid twice as much whilst Draco lounges on your desk and feeds you peeled grapes. Stupid unseeing world. Sending best wishes.

Oh, that's so crap. Oh, I'm cross now. Cross for you and for Art History. And for me, being as how I'll probably be in a similar position by the end of the week.

Bloody bastarding job people! *shakes fist*

Oh no! I'm SO sorry to hear that. :-(

I can't understand how they can cut art history. That's just wrong!

Oh, how awful! I'm so terribly sorry! In spite of all of the foreshadowing, it's still rather shocking that they'd axe an entire program. And what a rotten thing, to let you know right at the holidays.

Perhaps I can convince my little brother that I need an art historian "assistant" so I can er, "better understand his business." :-) (Quick, what do you know about the insides of pianos? Unfortunately, at this time, I can't afford you at more than $2 per hour.

I do hope this gives you the opportunity to find something more rewarding and less frustrating. *hugs*

That's terrible! I'm sure that you will find something even better, but no art history at a university? I'm so sorry, especially that it's happening now, in the season of stress.

So sorry to hear that. I'd feel bruised, too, if that happened to me.

But for you there's some better consolation than Feuerbach - you are free to finish your book then!

Oh, sweet, I am so sorry. Doesn't matter that you were half expecting it, it is still utterly crap.

It never fails to amaze me the amount of people who get news like this just before the 'festive' season.

Crap.

I can't imagine a university without Art History! I learned so much not just about art but about society, customs, fashion and politics!!!

That is bad news indeed, Lobelia, I'm very sorry.

Oh buggery bollocks indeed.

Those ill-educated heathens don't know a good thing when they see it! They're all fat seamy men in suits getting hideously over-excited at the idea of courses about Business Marketing and Systems Analysis and other unintellectual crap.

When I asked the VC about the university's strategic plans of dealing with the protection of small subjects (as per government blah-de-blah -- btw, I hate that Clark man, *hates*, although I delight in Blunkett's bye-bye but he's done his damage -- where was I?), he answered: 'Design attractive courses!' Stupid idiotic git. Yeah, duh! I happen to think our course is very 'attractive' (whatever 'attractive' means) but it is not 'vocational'. Although it is because nearly all our graduates find employment within 6 months. Grrrrrrr!!!!!!!

Okay, this tig is leading to a fit of rage. Must stop typing.

i'm really sorry to hear that, lobelia. :(

...but it sounds as if you have a strong research profile - so i'm sure that some far superior institution will want to snap you up very very soon.
