Haven't yet started reading Harry-porn because my friend in Manchester thrust the Da Vinci Code at me and it's actually quite moreish! Your gift, however, has spawned much spinning out of t'HP fic in my head.
Am pleased at the spawning! I imagine you are going to be throwing OotP across the room at some points but, it does have its moments!! Beware CAPLOCKHARRY, though! *laughs*
Oh, and here's what I figured out: Voldemort has cast a curse on Muggles that makes them mortally ill. Lucius keeps them in his dungeons and extracts pus from them that makes a v. powerful potions ingredient. They get boils and pustules and die after a few months. They are found after Voldemort's demise and everyone's horrified but nobody can figure out how to cure them so the remainder all die.
Hermione later figures out that this curse goes back in some weird way to a love potion. It turns out that the Muggles afflicted were all ones who loved each other: whole families, couples, friends. But Voldemort, in his hatred of the Potters, has cast a special curse on him and all his kin which outlasts V's demise. The curse is tied to loving someone, not to being loved, and the first person to die is Petunia.
Harry is immune because in killing Voldemort he's absorbed part of Voldemort's power. Also, I haven't worked this out yet, he may not really love anybody.
Dudley falls ill as soon as he becomes aware of having fallen in love with Draco. And the more he becomes aware of it, the worse he gets. When Draco finds out about it, he leaves him without telling him the reason, and Dudley's disappointment and resentment of Draco alleviates the disease for a while.
I haven't yet figured out how Vernon is still alive. Or whether he's dead, too.
Actually, the whole edifice, I just realise, is leaky because Dudley loved his mother. Fuck. Maybe it has to be sexual love. Pooh.
I've now turned the whole thing more on a 'what is love' kind of question. They have to work this out, how a love spell can be twisted into a hate-death spell, and how love and hate are linked and all that. So I think what it is, is that it's awareness of loving somebody. So Harry doesn't count because he was too little when he lost his parents: may have loved them but in a sort of unconscious way. Ah, no, now I remember: it's 'are you going to die for the loved person'. Dudley's mother would die for him so she goes. Vernon is too dopey and doesn't think in such categories. Dudley loves his mother but wouldn't die for her -- I think that makes sense because one rarely thinks of one's mother in such terms, more of one's children. (omg, the whole fic is turning into a MarySue!mother-and-son kind of fic!!)
Um. Anyway, that's where I'm currently at. 'tis fun thinking about the magic, though.
Oh, and Hermione has gone totally off magic in adult life. Finds it unscientific gibberish.
