Went to Manchester. Saw this. Came back.

:-)

Charles-August Mengin, Sappho

After my afternoon in the London Guildhall Art Gallery, with [livejournal.com profile] lazlet, I now feel a pleasant Victorianana overload, and crave yet more!

Hm. I think I slipped in one too many 'na's there... tried to access your pic before but LJ buggered me around and I couldn't get to it. Annoying!

Fantastic painting!!

You know, I am dreaming of Clytemnestra and her axe...

Gorgeous painting ... but, I'm thinking, ... 'tis a pity there so few men portrayed like this .... why is this darkpromisingsensual mostly limited to women?

Why? Men. Heterosexuality. Lack of slash in public life.

Men like to think of themselves as 'six foot tall and full of muscle'. Women in the 19th C. did not paint full-size naked men in this manner. And today? Art has taken such weird turnings.

Isn't it great? It's really large, too.

Glad your finger is better, btw.
