I know that [livejournal.com profile] badgermonkey has had a similar experience (*waves at Demelza*) but I never thought I'd have one: I was outed at dinner.

We were out at friends', invited to dinner, and their son, age 17, and their daughter, age 24, were also there. In the course of the conversation, it transpires that she writes Buffy fic on the web (1111) and immediately t'h interjects, "Oh, Lobelia knows all about that!"

Argh, cringe cringe. Apparently, I went beet red. I found myself saying things like "Oh, but I haven't written in years", "Oh, I never read Buffy stories", ack. And this with a friend's daughter! Somehow the categories just don't mix! And then t'h went on to praise Arthropods, and how I write about lotrps crew members, and I thought, ack, shut up, this is googleable.

But it made me realise what a democratic environment fandom is. On LJ, I chat to schoolgirls and uni students and fellow academics and people doing completely different things and people of all ages and walks o'life and from all over t'world, and I chat on the same democratic level of fangirl. In the setting of a dinner with friends and colleagues, it suddenly becomes strangely hierarchised and weird.

TOMORROW IS MY JOB INTERVIEW!

Yesterday I bought a suit that is so expensive that I dare not type it into my keyboard. It is Betty Jackson and it does make me loofk febulous. Hm, I may have to take an alternative outfit along to change into if I want to avoid sweating like a pig, as summer has finally arrived on this island.

How did she know? Did you know she knew beforehand?

Do you just have some sort of undefinable aura of perversion?

This girl didn't know! She mentioned (or her mother mentioned, I forget which) that she wrote Buffy stories (she did not say 'fic', she said 'stories'), or perhaps it was even her brother, come to think of it, trying to discredit her -- and then it was t'h who yelled: AHA! Fic! We know all about fanfic!

Hee hee hee! Sorry, I really shouldn't laugh because I wouldn't think it was very funny if it happened to me. Still, nice that t'hubster is so supportive. *g* If they google "Arthropods," they'll probably have you over for dinner all the time-"what a fascinating, eccentric woman,"- or never again- "er, what a er, fascinating, er, eccentric woman."

Yay for the suit! I've spent some pretty huge amounts on suits, but if they make you look fabulous, it's so worth it! You can wear them for years, and I always got the job if I wore one. Good luck on the interview! I'll be thinking of you!

I don't think they will google me. I was thinking more that the girl might. Although why I should care I'm not sure. It's just that I like to choose whom I hang out with webside, and it's creepy a rl person finding me. She can connect my rl name to whatever on the web and I want to be the guardian of whom I give that info to!

Ah, to be honest, the idea of being outed is the biggest reason I deleted the old journal. I don't know if it's wussy or not, but the idea of people I know in RL finding out about my fic-type habits sent me into a cold sweat whenever I thought about it.

I do appreciate all the different people you meet through fandom though, and completely love it. I'm contemplating dabbling again, but just being much more organised and locked-down about it. Hmm.

Also; Hurrah for expensive suits! I love suits, but rarely get to wear them. Hee. Good Luck!

SQUEE111 picture of you in suit please and thank you. for a while back there i was into the whole corporate look and spent loads on suits which i'm now way too fat to wear, more's the pity. now i'm into the casual stretchy material all embroidered and sparkly ...

good luck!

Well, I image-googled Betty Jackson but my suit isn't uploaded and of course I don't have a digital camera so grr. :-(

I would very much like to foist a pic of me in suit onto everyone but I just can't!!

Everyone kept saying how 'timeless' the suit was but I'm thinking, 'better keep up my Saturday swimming or the time of this suit will be up pretty fast', as I sucked in my belly.

Your husband did it! OMG!

Yay for job interview and for gorgeously beautiful suits. Can you wear something light and change into it for the interview?

I know! Isn't he naughty? But admittedly, the situation was screaming out for it. If your table mate says, "I write fanfic" in so many words, it takes some doing to keep a neutral face and go, "oh, what is that? How quaint". And this was clearly beyond t'hubster who was excited at finding a fellow slasher.

I, of course, live my life among scores of fellow online slasher and am not sure I need rl ones foisted on me!!

Well, I was at a conference on the weekend, and had a wondrously hypocritical conversation about slash with the god of the profession who was my DPhil external examiner. Entirely abstract, making academic points about intertextuality and subversion and Lacan, as though I had never become involved because of the delights of making Viggo Mortensen have bum fun with Sean Bean.

*is ashamed of self*

Hope the interview went very, very well. Though I suspect it is too hot to wear clothes.
