outed at dinner
Jun. 19th, 2005 02:20 pmI know that
badgermonkey has had a similar experience (*waves at Demelza*) but I never thought I'd have one: I was outed at dinner.
We were out at friends', invited to dinner, and their son, age 17, and their daughter, age 24, were also there. In the course of the conversation, it transpires that she writes Buffy fic on the web (1111) and immediately t'h interjects, "Oh, Lobelia knows all about that!"
Argh, cringe cringe. Apparently, I went beet red. I found myself saying things like "Oh, but I haven't written in years", "Oh, I never read Buffy stories", ack. And this with a friend's daughter! Somehow the categories just don't mix! And then t'h went on to praise Arthropods, and how I write about lotrps crew members, and I thought, ack, shut up, this is googleable.
But it made me realise what a democratic environment fandom is. On LJ, I chat to schoolgirls and uni students and fellow academics and people doing completely different things and people of all ages and walks o'life and from all over t'world, and I chat on the same democratic level of fangirl. In the setting of a dinner with friends and colleagues, it suddenly becomes strangely hierarchised and weird.
TOMORROW IS MY JOB INTERVIEW!
Yesterday I bought a suit that is so expensive that I dare not type it into my keyboard. It is Betty Jackson and it does make me loofk febulous. Hm, I may have to take an alternative outfit along to change into if I want to avoid sweating like a pig, as summer has finally arrived on this island.

Date: 2005-06-19 02:05 pm (UTC)Yay for the suit! I've spent some pretty huge amounts on suits, but if they make you look fabulous, it's so worth it! You can wear them for years, and I always got the job if I wore one. Good luck on the interview! I'll be thinking of you!

Date: 2005-06-19 02:34 pm (UTC)I do appreciate all the different people you meet through fandom though, and completely love it. I'm contemplating dabbling again, but just being much more organised and locked-down about it. Hmm.
Also; Hurrah for expensive suits! I love suits, but rarely get to wear them. Hee. Good Luck!

Date: 2005-06-19 09:04 pm (UTC)I would very much like to foist a pic of me in suit onto everyone but I just can't!!
Everyone kept saying how 'timeless' the suit was but I'm thinking, 'better keep up my Saturday swimming or the time of this suit will be up pretty fast', as I sucked in my belly.

Date: 2005-06-19 06:18 pm (UTC)Yay for job interview and for gorgeously beautiful suits. Can you wear something light and change into it for the interview?

Date: 2005-06-19 09:08 pm (UTC)I know! Isn't he naughty? But admittedly, the situation was screaming out for it. If your table mate says, "I write fanfic" in so many words, it takes some doing to keep a neutral face and go, "oh, what is that? How quaint". And this was clearly beyond t'hubster who was excited at finding a fellow slasher.
I, of course, live my life among scores of fellow online slasher and am not sure I need rl ones foisted on me!!
