As you know, I am woefully ignorant of any SGA canon. This is causing interesting permutations in my ficfanning but that is fodder for another post. For now, I have a question.

If I wanted to watch just one episode, which one would you recommend? Ideally, I would like to have a bit of Zelenka in it as well as McKay/Sheppard who, as I understand it, are in all the episodes. But I want a particularly good episode that makes me understand why exactly people started swooning over these chaps!

(I swoon but I swoon because of the febulous fic that is written.)

Well, if someone answers I'll be interested because I watched about half of the first season and I did not see anything swoon-worthy. I wonder if maybe the swoon-worthiness came after I'd given up on it... So yeah, if you get recced an ep I haven't seen I'll definitely have to watch it because it pains me that I don't get it, lol. There has to be a reason why the SGA love (for the show) keeps growing and growing on my flist, really. Apparently it's not just the fic.

Definitely not the first half of the first season. Hmm.

My favorite episode was probably Trinity (2x06). Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] lobelia321, I think it would play to your Zelenka love greatly, so if you only watch one, that's the one. The subplot though is sort of...weird. Although Random Medieval World is a staple of SGA.

yes, trinity is amazing. i think if you had time for a couple of eps, you could also look at siege 1-3. [great mckay/zelenka, which, i think, tyou were interested in]

but why bother watching it at all, if you pretty much assume you ain't gonna like it?

[if you really wanted to get to know the show, i'd recommend the very first episode which introduces the characters, underground, the storm 1&2, letters from pegasus, and the season finale. wow, that's 10 eps right there and not even the brotherhood and... ok, so it's my baby right now...i think you ought to watch them ALL!!! (well, except for the horrid beckett research ep that noone seems to like :-)]

My least favorite is Logan's Run World aka Childhood's End. Poisoning the Well is better than that!

But I am not assuming that !! I am assuming I am going to love it because my head is already stuffed full of fic characterisations and backstory. I'll be seeing it all through a veil of helenishisiscoloastolatresonatjuladthisisboneandabillionothers.

And I need to be recced only one episode because I think the only way I'm going to gain access is via somewhat shadily legal internet downloads and my home computer is too decrepit for those so I will have to do it in the office and there is only so much time I am willing to spend in the office!! Also, it will have to be while my office mate is not there because how am I going to justify watching sci-fi TV shows during my lunch hour??

So I simply can't, CAN'T, watch 3 episodes of Siege or all of the first season, argh, *wails*.

Maybe this thing will hit UK terrestrial soon. *looks around in hope* SG1 is on terrestrial but there is no McKay so what is the point??

Epiphany? I thought she said Trinity?

And are these not first season and hence not out on DVD?

(Listen, I'm willing to shell out money here. If there's a DVD, bring it on. You speak to the woman who spent absurd sums of money on triple-decker Xena video packs [the only ones available at my local store] just in order to get a peek at one episode which featured, like, five minutes of Karl Urban.)

On the other hand, I am sort of frightened at encountering canon after all this time in a pure fanon state. What if I hate it???

But then, I hate HP canon and that hasn't stopped me. So.

The one statement that Constance Penley made way back and which is definitely so way off the mark is the one about how you have to like Star Trek at least a little bit to appreciate the fan fic. HAH!

Not. Is all I have to say to that. The fanon is so often an improvement on the canon! And no-one is better than slashers at spinning shit into gold, as everyone who has suffered through mindless late-night canon-fandom rubbish on TV knoweth.

Actually, this is the first time that I am getting into a fandom without knowing anything at all of the canon except by second hand. This is quite interesting and sort of dizzy-making. It is true that I have read fics here and there of fandoms I know nothing of (Sentinel) but not this consistent obsession. What I am finding, though, is that I need canon knowledge to write . For me, canon gives me the handle, the personal way in.

So that is possibly the main reason I am willing to pay money and prostitute myself for a glimpse of canon!! I want to join in the fray and get writing!!

(apparently they released the DVDs in region 2 separately) can you watch region 1???

[or you could just get the first two-parter Rising whichcame out separately to get a sense...]

Well, I think you might have mistaken my reluctance for Lobelia's, lol. And I wasn't even assuming I wouldn't enjoy it, I was just saying I'd discovered how good the fic is in that fandom and was having a hard time reconciling that with how boring the first half of the first season had been for me. I was hoping maybe it was just that like a lot of shows, it had needed a bit more time to get to its cruising speed and I should have kept watching to get to the swoon-worthiness.

That said, I did give it another chance and watched the recommended eps. I was not convinced, which must mean it's just not a show for me. I find it weird, though, as I always quite liked SG1, but SGA is just boring me to tears. :-( I'm also disappointed because this means I won't be participating in a fandom which seems to be holding the kind of quality writing I've been looking for since I've grown tired of my old fandoms. But you have to admit it's just no fun reading fic when you really don't like the show/book/movie they're written about.

I tried though. :-(

Why do you append the cryptic numbers 2x06 to the title of Trinity? Is this important?

Psst -- you could go friend stargate_eps if you're so inclined...

Currently, the second half of second season is only airing in Canada, so that community, ah, knows what it's talking about. wink wink nudge nudge

Regarding the One Episode To See, I'm 14th-ing Trinity, but I must also mention Duet, which has canon genderbending m/m kissage. Cheesy ep, but Teh Hewlett is *fabulous,* Zelenka gets lots of screen time, and Ronon is more thoroughly introduced -- and all three of them are blistering hot in their varied ways. In my humble opinion.

Um.... Hi! Here via an improbable chain of link clicking.
