In the early morning, there was fog. The cars were covered in a white sheet, with beads of ice threaded in, like bobbles in knitting. The grass was also rimed, with patches of wet green where the sun had shone for a while.

The sun was very bright, diffused through the fog. The air shone. The trees' silhouettes looked filigree in the mist. They were staggered in planes; the foremost tree was dark brown, the one behind a shadowy slate, the furthest was hazy and shimmered in the fog.

...Silently the slate-grey tree slipped its roots from the earth and glided towards the dark brown one, its eyes fixed on the elegant branches, the smoothness of its bark and the suggestive way its roots emerged from the soil and then disappeared back in again. The grey tree got closer, closer until it could reach out and touch the nearmost twig, brushing so lightly against it that the grey tree was unaware of its presence until finally their main branches were touching. They intertwined softly at first and then more urgently, wrapping themselves around each and then rubbing their trunks together. The remaining tree in the background watched silently, forgetting the chill air, a small and usually unnoticed branch gradually extending itself from its trunk as it saw the same happen to its arboreal brothers, the slate-grey tree now exploring, caressing, looking for that knothole it knew was hidden somewhere in the rough bark of the brown trunk.

(Sorry. I have no idea where that came from.)
