I just need to rec this one story which I've just finished reading. It's by [livejournal.com profile] kaneko and it's called Intersections.

Why this fic is mindblowing

I cannot say how much I love this. It has joined my top four SGA fics and possibly top five fics in any fandom, and I had an inkling it might within the first paragraphs. It is not only a gorgeouos, gorgeous love story and a build-up so slow and sweet it's like swimming and sex that had me squirming and hot in my cane breakfast chair (with my lovely print-out and a cup of coffee), it is also fantastically well put together and written. I kept marvelling and thinking how much can I learn from this fic?

I love the bright clear style, so brisk but able to convey swoony slowness as well. What she did with the flashbacks was very intriguing, two lives built up in parallel. And the line 'they had nothing whatsoever in common' just killed me: this is what I come to slash for, to discover how two guys who are light years apart manage to get together. Also, the entire parallel construction has really already told the reader how much they do, in fact, have in common.

I loved the device of lists and equations (although I had to resort to actual cut and paste, physically with a glue stick, to get the correct formatting into my print-out, *g*). And the repetition of the device 'This is how...' (they met, Rodney heard about..., and so forth). This author is a mistress of ellipsis and summary; it was just such an utter delight to read how she zoomed through the years and dealt with issues in a few sentences. Some of the sentences broke my heart (Rodney's piano, John burying the cans in the yard). Also, the details were so real and so inventive.

The research paid off wonderfully well. I liked reading the note at the end: a village of betas, months of work: fandom is so generous. And it makes me feel better about having agonised away at a fic for two (2) years; maybe something good will come out of it after all...

I also am intrigued by the paragraph construction in this fic. There's a paragraph that starts with: Another time he goes to the mall. Then it's about people buying shoes. Then the universe. Then Earth. And then it ends with It hits him suddenly: he fucked a man. That is so clever, and so effective; it hadn't occurred to me that you could break paragraphs like that. I would probably have moved the 'It hits him suddenly' to the next paragraph but linking it with the mall and the universe makes it such a breathless and surprising paragraph; somehow the non-segue makes a beautiful kind of logic. There were a number of paragraphs like this. It reminds me of Gertrude Stein: A Sentence is not emotional a paragraph is. ... It is really powerful what she does with paragraphs.

Anyway, a phenomenal, blew-me-out-of-this-world story I am so grateful it exists.

Ooh, ooh! You asked me yesterday whether I'd read this, but you only gave the author's name and I couldn't remember who wrote it. I read this fairly early on in my SGA journey, and it's still one of my very favourites. There is a particular line in it, following an equation, that I keep thinking I must just post on its own, as a rec not only for the fic, but for the entire fandom! A sort of "yes, and this is why I read SGA, thank you very much". :) Only I can't remember what that line is now. Will have to look it up.

Oh I need to know that line! That line that sums up all of slash! I started to re-read that fic today, within hours of finishing it... it is that good. And it is a kind of classic slash fic. And the equations! I will sift through my print-out and see if I can second-guess you.

Oh, hang on. You said it sums up all of SGA not all of slash. This is what is happening: the twain are converging in my brain!

Although, disturbingly but also wonderfully freeingly, I seem to be able to write het with perfect ease in this fandom. In lotrips, it always felt forced and, anyway, I was hardly ever moved to write it but in SGA I'm hetting all over the place. And today I found myself drooling over the possibility of f/f Cadman/April Bingham... Pull me from the brink!

I am looking forward to our meeting so much.

Turns out it's not so much a line as three lines surrounding an equation. Also turns out it doesn't sum anything up really, I just liked it.

today I found myself drooling over the possibility of f/f Cadman/April Bingham... Pull me from the brink!

That is, of course, insane.

I am looking forward to our meeting so much.

Ooh, don't do that - it'll be a terrible let-down! ;)

No, I'm looking forward to it, too. But now *sigh* I must attempt to be friendly and sociable, because we have guests for dinner, two of whom I don't know, and one of whom is someone's new girlfriend, the someone being all nervous because we're all still friends with the old girlfriend, and so on and so forth. And I have a terrible headache and I'd really like to go to bed. In fact, I made the mistake of saying to myself, 'I'll just have a little lie down'... Had to drag myself up again. Oh well.

*pulls self together*

Didn't mean to imply, of course, that I'm not going to be friendly and sociable to you, too, because I am! Unless you'd rather I was grim and taciturn, of course.

What are these three lines surrounding an equation? I must know! I re-read almost the whole fic again today (couldn't even wait 24 hours for it) and is it the juxtaposition of equation with John noticing Rodney's thigh? Because that is genius, that is. (Also I just used the diction 'that is' at the end of a sentence. What does this betoken??)

Cadman/Bingham, I know. But I've also been devising new Aprils and new Rodneys! What is the het equivalent of 'they are so GAY'? Because I'm turning into some sort of het ficcer in this fandom. Who knew? I was pondering why. What Cadman and Bingham have in common is that they are both quite incorporeal; there's not much of an actual physical female body to confuse one. It helps, too, that Cadman is feisty and is, in fact, Rodney's body, and that April is, in fact, baby!Dom.

Look:

Cute blonde? Short hair? It's totally April Bingham.

Yes, it's that little section. As follows (now watch as I copy and paste and the formatting goes all to shit):

He thinks: If an F/A-18A Hornet is cruising at 700mph...

L
= CI x r x A x V22

L
= 1.8 x 1.31 x 37.2 x (1126540.8/3600)22 = 4 294 826 newtons

When he turns his head, his mouth is right next to Rodney's thigh.

"Rodney," he says. I really want to suck your cock.

I figured it was that. *sighs happily*

Printing the lists and equations out was a headache; I ended up cutting and pasting literally, with actual scissors and a glue-stick.

Bugger, our plans have been scuppered! We said the week beginning the 15th, but it turns out two other people have booked that week off and I have to stick around to do their jobs. I can't get any more time off until the first two weeks of July, so we can either wait 'til then, or do a weekend? Don't know how convenient that is for you...

Pooey louie. Well, let's keep July as default option. I am upstairs away from calendar; weekends are okay if you come here but distracting with t'sons and all and swooning pleasure over SGA will be reduced. Also, they are quite busy but I will check calendar and confirm. Otherwise, first week of July? I'll check what day is best.

Thicker than Water is next on my list. Its print-out sits next to my bed as I type. *g*

My top four in SGA so far are:

Julad, Absurdity Theory
Shalott, Time in a Bottle
Cesperanza, Things to do in Denver when you're dead
Kaneko, Intersections (she is elusive, isn't she? or are most of her posts flocked?)

I am sure you have read all of these. If not, I will supply links! :-)

i'm crap with organizing my links. i certainly have more than 4 ultimate faves (especially in hp, omg) but those are ones that happened to come up. enjoy the tradescant. i'm not particularly harry/snape-oriented but those fics just blow me away. oh, yes, plural because there's a companion to the one listed on that page.
