my website has disappeared
Jun. 22nd, 2006 11:27 amBugger and shit pooh.
My website has disappeared!
And I know whose fault it is, too: mine. The other night I updated it and I must have inadvertently hit the wrong button or who knows what and the bloody thing has now been truncated to one screen long! It's the index of fics, and it had all my fics listed, with links to the fics and summaries, and grouped according to date and fandom -- and now there is one link only, the one I uploaded and updated the other night.
*wails*
And did I make a mirror back-up on my hard disk? NOOOO!
*bangs head on desk*
This is really, really annoying and tedious. I will now have to teach myself CSS (with the help of
liviapenn's helpful linksites) but still: this is a mega-tonne of fiddling with code and retrieving summaries and putting my fics in chronological order...
*wails some more and kicks self and kicks computer for good measure*
Anyway, there's no way I'll get round to this before the hotties are off my TV screen (that is, the end of the World Cup on 9 July -- which, btw, I anticipate with some dread; it is the hole I fell into after the 1998 World Cup that hurried me into the arms of, shock horror, golf). Somehow I wasn't this manic four years ago -- or was I? Anyone out there who remembers me from way back?
badgermonkey I seem to recall frantic Gary/Alan txts?
I relied on my niche for keeping all my fics in one look-uppable place! *feels bereft*
Others: what do you do to safeguard yourself from website techie nightmares??

Lots of free templates. You might not want any of them, but I learned a lot by looking at the code.

Date: 2006-06-22 02:55 pm (UTC)I did not lose my website. Athnrai still exists, but I had a massive hard drive failure, and that PC has completely vanished from the face of the Earth since then, untraceable. On it were many of my stories that I did not put on my website yet. Like, The Ninth House... gone. Intensity... gone. Opera... gone. GONE!!!!!!!!
On top of that, all traces of my slashy writing self have been obliterated from the web, and I asm not sure why. My stories on Mirrormere disappeared. On Closer Than Brothers my stuff vanished too. No trace of it anywhere. I find it most odd.
So... I feel for you. Really I do.

Re: I love Wayback Machine
Date: 2006-06-23 04:01 pm (UTC)Wayback Machine (web.archive.org) finds the most recent cache of a website if you have the URL. Of course, the caches won't be there forever but if you're quick enough, you can find what you've lost.
