sad about tainted final
Jul. 10th, 2006 03:49 pmI am still shocked about the Infamous Headbutt.

For those not in the know: this is what Zinedine Zidane of France, football god of an entire generation, did to Marco Materazzi of Italy last night. If Cristiano Ronaldo is Achilles (according to t'h), then Zidane is Ajax, slaying the herds of cows, ranting 'they are the enemy', and bringing disgrace onto himself. But he had that fine excuse: 'The gods made me do it.' Which didn't prevent him from impaling himself on his sword some time later. (I read the play last year; it was great but not as good as the one about Clytaemnestra and if I could remember titles and playwrights this post would appear more erudite but I can't be bothered to run up the stairs to check...)
So. I am trying to de-cathect from the World Cup. I did this by obsessively image-downloading C.Ronaldo pics for the past 50 minutes or so. Hm, not sure I have adopted the right method here. I also actually began to watch some of my taped games. No, no! That way insanity lies!!
I am dismayed by the ongoing C.Ronaldo hate. I am intrigued by the fact that the same ref sent off Rooney who sent off Zidane. I can't believe that they didn't send Figo off for his very own headbutt! And I await clarification of what was actually said during that infamous exchange of words that led to the Zidane headbutt. Ah, thus fall the great...
I am still not happy about Italy, despite their startlingly handsome goalkeeper Buffon and their endearingly bearded Gattuso but fair enough: they were the only team to get a real goal (not a penalty), and it would have been tainted to see France hoisting the trophy after that shameful red-card incident. I just feel so sorry for the team mates whom Zidane let down: poor old Ribéry (I love Ribéry! He looks like someone out of Asterix!), Henry, Barthez, Thuram -- what did they do to deserve this? And why are the English all (well, okay, not all) stomping on C.Ronaldo -- why don't people feel sorry for Rooney's team mates who were let down by him? And as for diving: the Portuguese try to do it but the ones who actually do it with success and panache are the Italians. And if people hadn't run up to the ref to point out the headbutt (as C.Ronaldo ran up to Rooney to point out the groinstomp), I would have been upset: of course, people need to run up and shout about that! This should not influence the ref but that is another matter.
The ref, btw, was a hero.
The Argentinian ref Horacio Elizondo, sending off Zidane.

Adieu, Zizou.

Buffon and Klose at Italy/Germany.

Ribéry/Dommenech

The very interesting Olympiastadion in Berlin. This was built for the 1936 Olympics by the Nazis and, before its post-modern revamping, was a prime example of bombastic pseudo-classical fascist megalo-architecture. It had reliefs of naked men leading horses by Thorak (I think it was Thorak, big-time Nazi sculptor) and the famous Hitler tribune. This pic shows the original stone staircase. They've tried to disguise Nazi rectilinearity with baroque curves.

And just because we haven't seen Brazil recently (and they were jeered upon their return home which is so sad!):
Kaká/Ronaldinho

Nor Australia: Cahill/Aloisi/Neill

Viduka, More, Cahill and Kewlie!

Oh, and P.S. I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean 2 yesterday. It was okay, a fun romp. One thing I realised: my Bloom lust is totally and utterly unrevivable. I kept thinking of the match during some of the too-long action scenes.

He so does! And you know Asterix? *loves you even more*
Before I'm off - in that pic where Cristiano has his finger in his mouth - is that a Schmusedecke?!!!
(no subject)
Date: 2006-07-10 05:46 pm (UTC)As soon as I saw that suckfingerpic, I thought 'blankie'. As in 'Schmusedecke'. So my answer to your question is: yes! Quite clearly yes! Cristiano is Linus!!

*MAJOR SQUEE* God, I love Linus! The blankie... Who's Sally, though? Oh God, are we Sally in an abstract-internetsy kind of way?!?
(no subject)
Date: 2006-07-10 09:42 pm (UTC)Ack! We are not Mary Sues! We are Sally Sues!!!
Um. How did this conversation start again? How on earth did we get from football to Sally Sues??

Date: 2006-07-10 09:58 pm (UTC)Sally Sue? *gröhl* Hi then, Sally Sue. This is Sally Sue. I'm still searching for that pic of our Linus in that damn red speedo...

and my pervy remarks were not really appropriate but i figured since it was a midnight show... though young children were definitely in the theater.

Date: 2006-07-10 04:54 pm (UTC)Whereas old footballers... they just get sexier! Growl.

Date: 2006-07-10 04:15 pm (UTC)Yeah, ok, Zidane is juman, I get that. And even if he acted shamefully and let his teammates down, he was still a great football player, but. Nothing, NOT A THING will ever justify violence to me. You just don't turn around and violently physically attack someone just because they insulted you. Whatever Matterazi told him does not justify what Zidane did. And I'll stick to that.
That also doesn't mean I don't think Matterazi is a scumbag because even without knowing what he said to Zidane and from reading stuff about him, he clearly is. I still think nobody deserves to be hit, that just brings whoever is doing the hitting down to the same level as the scumbag who provoked.
Gawd but all this reminded me again why it is that I detest football (not the actual game but more everything around it) so much.

Date: 2006-07-10 04:59 pm (UTC)Absolutely. I couldn't agree more. It is such a sad ending to what has been a fabulous career and he's been such a god to so many people. But why could he not just hold back for another twelve minutes, for f's sake? This way Materazzi has won.
why it is that I detest football
Heh, it's just a fandom kerfuffle on a much, much larger scale.

Date: 2006-07-10 04:50 pm (UTC)ahaha, zidane is my hero because materazzi needed to be put in his place. though, like i said in the rooney incident, show them revenge on the pitch!!!!
oh, well.

Date: 2006-07-10 05:56 pm (UTC)materazzi needed to be put in his place for his history of violence on the pitch, esp. during this one game against a.c. milan *wrath*
and in the rooney incident, i meant that rooney should have gotten revenged by playing the game and scoring instead of resorting to violence.

Date: 2006-07-10 09:41 pm (UTC)Absolutely! The best revenge is always a clean win.
This Cup has been the death of me. I feel wrung dry.

Date: 2006-07-10 05:18 pm (UTC)But seriously, there are allegations of racist abuse, and everyone is being very tight lipped in both camps. And - again seriously (and I hate to have to say this) - some of these guys may be Teh Hawt, but they still have objectionable views. Anyway, that's enough seriousness about that!
2. Cristiano: sadly this is serious as well. I've heard today that his house in Cheshire has been vandalised; which means he won't come back to UK if he can possibly help it, and has every justification for being frightened to do so. Grrr! Can't someone go headbutt the scumbags who did THAT?

Date: 2006-07-10 09:40 pm (UTC)This is the problem with rps. Some of the people may not be Nice. At least with fps the terrain is clear: goodies here, baddies there. And yes, I realise this, *sigh*. They are footballers. Footballers are neither politicians, authors, academics nor sensitive girlie types wot luv slash. Alas.
Yes, yes, and I saw the nipple twisting. Who knows what all that was about? We'll never know. We'll only know what they tell us.
Just when I'm discovering an ounce of club interest, the man has to go and be frightened out of the country! Ack. The whole thing makes me sick, sick, sick.
*runs away to seek refuge in slash*

may i ask where you found those ronaldo pics? mind if i steal them for icon making?

Date: 2006-07-11 12:17 am (UTC)I couldn't believe what happened when I saw the Zidane headbutt and neither could the rest of the people at the bar. As I cannot believe the hate-campaigns against Cristiano, too shocking for words.
The random droolpics are awesome and I squeed and frightened the the cats I'm catsitting, LOL. Thank you, especially for the first two of Cristiano *sigh*

Date: 2006-07-11 12:47 am (UTC)Zidane, however, was shocking. No matter what was said, it shows that FIFAs message of football as a game to bridge ethnic and national tensions is a total joke. It comes closer to inflaming them.
Zidane made himself look like a common thug, who chose violence over a WC win (shows, sadly, where one of the greatest players of the game priorities are). What an example.
Rooney doesn't necessarily come off much better - but he is the Future, and he is White, and the British aren't going to raz another fallen idol like they did Beckham after 1998 (hate mobs? burning effigies? cheering for his kid to die of cancer? i mean that's *crazy*). C. Ronaldo, not added by porteguese stereotypes, looked ridiculously slimey when he winked to the bench. Couple that with his pretty boy good looks, the teammate betrayal (of a Loyal Brit), and his outspoken love of Spain, and Ronaldo scripted himself as the British national villian with all the subtlty seen in a George Lucas film. (To stretch the analogy too far ...he's is the darth maul to Sven's Emperor :)
Basically, one team won. The others were 'robbed', so of course there has to be a villian... I somehow doubt Gosso is making australian vacation plans right now.
Ahh.. give me Trinibad and Tobago. Just ridiculously pleased to be there.
And maybe Ronaldinho's infectious bucktooth grin. He hasn't headbutted anyone yet, has he?

Date: 2006-07-11 05:37 am (UTC)I've been loving your football posts for the past weeks and I so agree about de-cathecting... Although dad and brother follow Arsenal religiously, so perhaps I'll just get my doses of hot football boys there.
Cristiano is indeed a lovely little creature. You have excellent taste. He does, however, look about twelve in the two with the ads in the background. Still lovely, but so very young.
One thing I realised: my Bloom lust is totally and utterly unrevivable. *sigh* *nods agreement, but says nothing so as not to offend flist members* Alas, Johnny at 43ish is holding up better than Orlando at 30ish.
I friended you last week sometime - it was far too much work to have to keep checking your journal for hot boy posts.

Date: 2006-07-11 10:21 pm (UTC)Wow. The things one finds out!! Football brings everybody out of the woodwork! HELLO!!! (For years? wow *feels self-conscious but flattered*)
Arsenal! I have never been into club football but I am so withdrawaling that I may well need to get into it. And London's only 50 minutes away from me, after all!
Cristiano looks about twelve? *cackles* Oh, dear, youth.
Johnny at 43ish is holding up better than Orlando at 30ish.
Absolutely!!! Go, us 40-somethings, say I.

Date: 2006-07-12 02:52 am (UTC)If you're only 50 minutes away, Arsenal might not be a bad way to go. My dad grew up in Highbury, hence his connection. And the team is full of lovely lads. *points to icon* Henry's not bad either and who knows, some Italians might be wandering north this year.
As a fellow 43 year old, I am rooting for Johnny! But I'll join you in perving on the youngsters as well.
Love you and t'h, btw. Hubby and I are not nearly so amusing. Although I think he can tell I've got a thing for Cannavaro. *g*

Re: your pic spammage makes me happy :D
Date: 2006-07-18 10:09 am (UTC)And if Ribé comes to London, I'll be able to see Asterix with just one 50-min. train ride! Alea iacta est!! (Or something.)
