Have been feeling a bit despondent today. Partly perhaps the weather? It turns out that when I was complaining about the heat, I actually meant that I liked the heat. Also, my horrible institution. I lay awake last night worrying about all the modules I'll be teaching next semester, and the timetable. This morning a new lecturer rang to discuss the design module I'm teaching -- this was actually a good thing because she'll be co-teaching it with me (so less time for me) but also a bad thing because it meant that I had contact with the horrible institution for about 1/2 an hour, and then I drew up the reading list and week-by-week outline (which took me about 3 hours) -- and this meant that for quite a bit of time today I was focused on stuff to do with the Horrible Institution. And not on my Book.

The trampoline I rashly ordered last week for a tidy sum arrived but I am too hopeless to assemble it by myself; also, I am opposed to all this self-assembly Ikea trend. I rang around and finally I got onto the guys who denuded our garden two months ago and they will assemble the trampoline and clear the garden where it is meant to go -- but not till Saturday! At least, this will be in time for the arrival of my sister on Monday who comes to stay with her four children -- and I wanted the trampoline up by then!

Then an old friend from America rang. He will be in the UK with his wife and child next week and the only day he can make it to visit is my sister's last day here. Now, this is not convenient for me but I don't want to say no to an old friend, so it all sort of annoyed me.

Plus the rain. And t'sons had boring friends over who got on my nerves. And I've had a vaginal infection for two months. I'm going into a special clinic for it now -- they gave me an appointment today but hey, guess what? I have my periods so the appointment had to be moved to next week.

On Wednesday, we go to Herefordshire. Tomorrow night, I go to see Shaka Heslop (or was that Hislop?) of West Ham. Farmer Giles of West Ham!! Well, maybe that will cheer me up. The thought of my local crap club is not scintillating, I have to say.

I suppose I'll just go to bed and do a Scarlet O'Hara: 'Tomorrow is another day.' And put myself on a strict activity regime tomorrow: a limit of 20 minutes on any module planning activities (I do have to do some; I need to get 3 module booklets written by mid-August or I'll be buggered when I get back from France); perhaps a bike ride to get movement; the Book First Thing!!!; and some healthful fic-writing in the afternoon for at least 20 minutes.

Oh dear, and we just saw Super Size Me which is enough to make anybody puke. And to think we used to go there with t'kids! Not for years, though.

Anyway, thus endeth the morosey-pooh rambloid of tonight. Meh.

ETA: Oh, but I'm reading Anton Chekhov short stories at the moment and they are lovely. Wistful, light of touch, astute, phenomenally well-observed, and astounding timings. The way he moves through time, and the way he activates nature, and the way he creates characters who are not great, who are in many ways awful, but tugs at your heart strings via these characters, and in such an economical way. I like these stories a lot.

Sounds like you're having a 'write the day off' day. When you have those days you just have to say 'this day is written off. From now on nothing counts until tomorrow.' Admittedly by 11pm you're virtually at that point anyway, but it means you can go to sleep and you don't have to lie awake worrying about anything because you're officially on 'doesn't count' time.

That's what I do, anyway. Hope things look much more cheerful tomorrow!

*tsk* How ridiculous life is sometimes, eh? I guess we are expected to grin and bear it. I took my older son to the Ear/Nose/Throat specialist today. He has enlarged, inflamed tonsils and a nasal obstruction. The earliest O.R. booking he could get was Dec. 4th and the specialist gave him some nasal spray to use for now.

Oh my goodness, yes. "Super Size Me". Saw it last winter and it cured us of fast food forever. (Sort of. I have an addiction to fried onion rings but try to only eat them twice a year.)

Oh, and now you've really got me interested in reading some Anton Chekhov. I'm not sure if I ever have.

P.S. Chekhov short stories are lovely! I never realised he wrote aught but plays. I especially liked Lady with Lapdog, The Darling, Ionych and A Boring Story.
