After the fabulous fun I had at the match I attended on Tuesday, I have been urging people to go and see football live in comments. So, as part of my mission to convert everyone to the joys of live football, the delights of manly flesh in the flesh, the awesomeness that is rps (these people are real, omg liek @-@), and the benefits of cheap and available ticket for one's local side: I am calling upon everyone to post a few pics of your local football club!!!!!!.
Pick a club! Let it be local, so that you may buy tickets and drool in person! And revel in the rubbishness that may well be your local team -- let not the lack of premiership kudos put you off: teh pretty can be found anywhere and everywhere, and who knows? The obscure pretty of today may well become the global pretty of tomorrow -- and then you can say: I was there from the start!
So, pick a club! And to start the glorious silliness, I give you pics of Cambridge United!
I would have loved to start off with one of those daggy naff pics of the whole squad, facing the camera with their fists on their knees but alas, the CB United site is the stupidest site on earth and requires you to 'sign in' in order to view their photos so here is a selection of their PLAYERS:
Dashing goalie Paul Crichton!

Andy Duncan!

Matthew Bloomer!

An international presence!! This is Australian winger Jon Brady in his away kit.

Michael Morrison tackling a West Ham guy in the game I saw! Somewhat of a Dominic Monaghan profile, no?

(If this image doesn't work: find it at Getty Imges.)
Look! They even have their own local version of The Manpile!

Currently, this squad plays in what the English quaintly and wonderfully call 'The Conference' which is a rather academic way of saying 'those rubbishy teams wot nevah made it into the first or second division league games'. They used to be in the league but alas, those were the days. Now they are very poor and hence not very good and hey! Here's another reason to know your local team: you can go all political and start ranting about how football these days is all about the money and the star players and the Chelsea and the Man Utd.
I have already seen these guys play twice!
*falls over*
And look! It's my cradle-robbed West Ham cutie!! *is in icon cesspit of insanity*
(This is so stalkerishly rps it's creepy. I saw this guy the other night. I am morphing into Harry Figwit who should really be called Mary Figwit. Harry Marry, hoho.)
Post your pics here or in your own journal! But do put a link in here to your own journal! So we can all get to know each other geographically and wallow in the global localness that is LJ. :-)
Note: Non-footballing Flist Fliends: Please do join in! *cackles temptingly*

Date: 2006-08-05 08:48 pm (UTC)Would you mind if I post it? I shall of course provide full acknowledgment and linkage because
we all now know the difference between homage and just plain plagiarism and can spell both correctly, can't we?I'm very polite that way.(no subject)

Date: 2006-08-05 09:37 pm (UTC)First we have goalie Kevin Stuhr Ellegaard who didn't get to play yet but looks way better than goalie number one Fiedler. And really who can resist a man who says he loves to be petted? And would want to be Tarzan because he gets to swing from liana to liana with Jane all day...
Why oh why isn't he playing? He's sooo pretty... *cries a bit*

Date: 2006-08-05 11:17 pm (UTC)I also cannot believe that today I linked to pics of Union Berlin, Verein für Leibesübungen Osnabrück, Cambridge United, Kidderminster Harriers and some Hong Kong club whose name I can't even remember!!!!!!!!
Bottom goalie: what is red patch on cheek? Gorbachevesque skin discolouration? Excitement at seeing the other goalie on the bench?? A heart drawn with lipstick by the top goalie during half-time???
At second glance: are these two goalies the same man? They have identical little beards!!!

Date: 2006-08-05 11:19 pm (UTC)The club was formed in 1892 as BFC Hertha 92, taking its name from a steamship with a blue and white smokestack. One of the four young men who founded the club had taken a day trip on this ship with his father.
Hertha performed consistently well on the field, including a win in the first Berlin championship final in 1905. However, their on-field success was not matched financially and in 1920 Hertha merged with the well-heeled club BSC Berlin to form Hertha Berliner Sport Club.
A steam ship!!! Oh, god, I am not breathing; this fandom is KILLING me. The names of these clubs...!!!!!!

Date: 2006-08-05 11:37 pm (UTC)Berliner Sport Club... Ah, Berlin. I have to admit that I can be very local-patriotic. But a steam ship after a day trip - what? Didn't they have any better ideas? *shakes her head*
*cackles right with you*
