On Saturday night, I made chocolate mousse. T'h cooked borschtsch.

On Sunday, we set out nibbles for ten. Six guests arrived. T'kids jumped on the trampoline. T'h cooked leek, mushroom and tarragon risotto. One of the guests printed out his poetry and read out his poems to us. These are really old friends of t'h's mother (who died 9 years ago); they are Australians and it was really, really nice and relaxing. It was lovely to remember that there are things beyond money; academe these days tends to twist everything into a money matter. The greatest thing about fanfic is that it is entirely not out for pecuniary returns. I love that.

T'guests left and immediately 4 other guests arrived. Their sons were babysat with our sons while we adults went out to dinner. Somehow, we have become these social dervishes.

Thanks to Flylady, the kitchen was pristine when I got up this morning!

Also: this morning we drove to look at some kittens. Yes! We are getting kittens! When we come back from holiday in September, we are getting a little black boy with white paws and a little black girl. They are teh cute. T'family has already unanimously agreed to call the little boy Zizou.

Tonight, my sister comes with her 4 children. Life is a whirl. Now I need to go and buy food, then cook it, then make up five beds, then tidy, then write some wraith fic. I must also at some point write my book and do my module booklets. And buy a present for my sister! Argh.

I am annoying t'family by threatening to support Chelsea. They form a solid Arsenal block and t'h claims that t'family must show solidarity in their club supportness. Um... what??? Hahahahah. I was obsessed with football decades before these relations of mine hopped onto the bandwagon. Not with club football, admittedly, but heh, it is fun annoying them. Whenever they go 'ooh, Arsenal, Thierry Henry, Jens Lehmann', I go 'Ballack! Shevchenko!', and then they go, 'evil billionaire owner', and I go, 'phw.'

We suddenly decided a week ago, put out the word and hey presto! They are only 4 weeks old so we can pick them up when we get back from our holidays at the beginning of September. Re pic spam: does this mean I will have to work out how to use the digital camera and find the connector cable...???

I was thinking of you! In your footsteps we follow! We suddenly decided a week ago, and then thought, what the heck, let's get two, and we put the word out and bingo! They are only 4 weeks old so we can pick them up when we get back from our holiday in early September. Any suggestions to helping them settle in?? And tips on what to buy? I know we need a kitty litter, litter and a shovel, cat food and cat bowls... would you get a bowl per cat or share? What food do you feed? What's the best place for the litter?

Re pics: I will have to work out how to use the digital camera, will I then? And find the connector cable...??

Well, I would say that you get a litter tray and then, as soon as they have their last jabs, install a cat-flap and train them to go outside!

Also, try and get them on dried food. Mine are now off the wet and everyone is much happier. As long as you make sure they have fresh water, they're happy. A bowl each and a water bowl has always worked for me no matter whether there were 1, 2 or 3 cats in the house. Oddly enough, when I had Small and Hollie, they would both eat from one bowl and then move on to the other! However, when I tried just one bowl there was full-scale insurrection. Bizarre!

You can get kitten food for the first months. Even if you chose to go with wet food, it's an idea to mix in dry as it is good for their teeth. :)

I'd say a scratching post [although my two are not clawers, unlike Small who was] and some toys. Mind you, I find that you can make your own and they're happy. Soemthing tied on the end of a piece of string brings hours of kitten entertainment. They'll soon let you know if they're bored. ;)

Put the litter somewhere with lino that is in a corner and, as long as you clean it out regularly, it should be fine. But, as I said, get them out of using it as soon as you can. You can get cat-flaps for patio-doors or find a convenient small window to fit one in. Something. Cat-flaps are a god-send!! Mine would be less happy and more annoying without theirs. :)

Hoorah! Cats are a delight and a constant source of stress relief. I'd be utterly lost without mine. I loff them. :)

our vet told us male cats shouldn't have dry food because they have a tendency to develop bladder stones. otherwise i prefer dry food, too, less smells! and as laz said, it's good for the teeth. generally, i'd say go with the more expensive brands, animonda, science diet, iams, those normally don't contain sugar (cats can't even taste sweet stuff!) but more meat than the cheap stuff as well as additional nutrients. it's more expensive, yes, but it helps keeping the cats healthy and means less vet costs.

our cats love some catnip from time to time. you can buy it dried in little pillows or similar, but it also grows in the garden, just like peppermint.

we only have our litter boxes for emergencies, our cats very much prefer to go outside.

yay kitties!!

I didn't know that about male cats! Although, that may be because -- apart from the boy who ran away -- mine have always been female. Interesting!

And I second not giving the cheap stuff, the additives are frightening!

as fas as i understand it it doesn't do much harm if they drink enough, but they usually don't. can't remember though why there's a difference between male and female...

we had a boy who ran away, too, although he only went bacl to his home a few streets away, but we didn't know that at the time. now he comes back regularly and fights with the new boy :)

Wow, you had a nice weekend. It was a long weekend in Canada, well, everywhere except for Quebec, so I didn't have to work. That was lovely. I watched lots of movies about boys falling in love with other boys. ♥

What's "borschtsch"?

Kittens! It seems everyone around me is getting pets. And Zizou! Oh, comme c'est mignon!

Can't you back both Arsenal and Chelsea? I'm actually watching an Arsenal friendly match at the moment. Goodness are they cute! Cesc and Van Persie and Reyes and Djourou and the hottest of them all, Freddie!!! Freddie and Thierry aren't playing today, but Arsenal is still winning 5-0. Ooh, Walcott is cute too. They're so young, though. Well, might as well take the scenic route to hell. Oh, 7-0.

Sounds as if you had a lovely weekend. :) And kittens or should that be t'kittens? ;) So cute! I'm more of a dog person myself but kittens are cute, too.

And you know, the thing with the evil billionaire owner - it pains me to say but t'family might have a point there.... On the other hand Chelsea now has Shevchenko... Oh, just spread the love! And let's not forget ManU with little Cristianochen. :)

Hmm, sorry, there is no club like my beloved Ajax but I have a fondness for Arsenal (maybe it's the red and white kit, LOL). And Freddie of course.

I find it hard to imagine anyone getting enthusiastic about Lehman.

Though my partner and I have an agreement that, should Thierry Henry ever make come-hither 'va-va-voom' noises across a crowded room at him, I will raise no objection.
