This may be the wrong forum to ask but: why do people keep blogs?

What exactly is the difference between a blog and an LJ? And why choose one and not the other?

Blogs mystify me. I just looked at David Hewlett's blog and (besides being totally spooked by the rps'ishness of it all, and does Cristiano Ronaldo have a blog?? All mis-spelled??? "Hello my freinds yesterday i did an other hat trick. wayne is my freind. how you say in english? liek omg. or is that spelled lkie gmo? now i must go to do teh training and spend some of my money. do my teeth look al rite?") was puzzled. It seems that a blog is a website where one blopfs one's thoughts of the day and then people comment but there is no Friends lists and there is no way of replying to the commenters (or is there?).

So what are the disadvantages of a blog? The advantages? And do any of you have a blog as well as your LJ, and if so, why?

Isn't lj a sort of blog, too?

*is totally clueless about possible differences/ad-/disadvantages*

And thank you very much, one lj/blog is absolutely enough for me, lkie gmo *laughs* I love that expression, it sounds Icelandish to me.

Well, is LJ a sort of blog? I just don't know. I think they are cognate but is LJ a subset of blog?

The way I understand it, a blog is all about shouting in the dark about whatever your chosen subject is. I've no idea how people "advertise" themselves as blogs don't have a friends-list feature (as far as I know). So we get the added element of communities and - dare I say it? - friends in LJ, which is dead handy when you want to keep in touch with certain people or organise a meeting.

Yes, how do you interact on a blog? People comment but I'm not sure there's a reply-to-comment function. That whole tigging and togging thing!! And how do you get people to read it? I mean, how do people know you're out there without Friends-Friends and so forth?

To clarify "Blog" is now an official term for Weblog, which just means instant publication on the internet in a format like Blogger or LiveJournal or one of the many blog services. LJ is a blog.

Personally I keep a blog because I move around the world often and it is an easy way to keep in touch with friends in different locales. It is cheaper than phone calls and I don't like talking on the phone. I can share photos and send links and send information at the touch of a click instead of trying to explain verbally with mistakes included, what I am talking about. I find that for an expat, a blog is a godsend. It is also a place just to rant and place my personal thoughts into the ether.

I knew that blog was short for weblog but the blogs I've seen (that call themselves blogs) look very different to the blog I'm on (that calls itself LiveJournal). Also, I'm not sure I use LJ as a log; I use it as an interactive tool of communication and squee. But perhaps not everyone does this? But LJ is also cheap and when I was travelling I used it to keep in touch -- so why do people use another kind of blog instead?

your lj is your blog. it's like saying, 'i have a hoover' or 'i have a vacuum cleaner.'

But most blogs I look at that don't have LJ written on them seem very non-interactive and have no Friends function. So why do you use LJ and not, say, Blogger?

how about comparing blog and ljs to individual air-conditioners and central air-conditioners then? one's stand-alone and you use/view it by going to it and the other is connected and, when you turn the thing on, it connects to all the other rooms/ljs.

i use lj because my so-called friends lured me into temptation.

I suppose you might prefer a 'real' blog if you weren't keen on the jolly, cosy friendslisttasticness of LJ. They look a bit more 'serious', don't you think? I used to have a Blogger blog, but I decamped to LJ because it was more fun. My blog is still there, actually. Before that I used to spend all my time at a message board, which was just another way of being part of a community of sorts - just a slightly different way of going about it. It's whatever you get used to. I found LJ terribly confusing when I arrived here.

I sometimes read this blog, which seems to work very much as a community for many of its readers. I think perhaps it's sometimes easier to get a debate going, purely because you can't reply to other people's comments. You can reference them, but the whole conversation is more public, because all discussion takes place in that one thread. I explained that very badly, but I know what I mean! :)

omg, you had a blog! *is spooked by alternate persona* But why? There are no comments at all! You might as well write on your navel. And the message board analogy makes sense to me. In a way, LJ is like a chat room.

That was before I realised why comments were cool and decamped to LJ. I can't remember, I think maybe you had to pay to get comments, or something. But I was still messageboarding it at the time, so it didn't really matter.

Nice bit of Cristiano-Blog there.... Harry Figwit quickly checked the time before returning to deciphering Cristiano's Blog. Hmmm. Written about an hour ago... so Teh Traneing would be in full swing. Time for Harry to get to Carrick Road, then. Harry hoped Cristiano's teeth looked Al Rite too - they always came out well on the zoom-shots; and in any case who KNEW what he might need to use them for ......

(IRL life, if he had a Blog he'd probably call himself some really subtle pseudonym - like Notfatronny or Merchesman)

LJ VS Blogger.com

I have both. I keep my friendy-friend personal journal here on LJ, and I have a travel article based humor blog on Blogger called One Small Bag, simply because the look is better in a more "newsy" fashion.

Originally I had Blogger as my personal journal too but more of my friends were on LJ, so I came here.
