Suddenly, in the middle of gamelan, my wrist swelled up and had an angry blue bruise on it. It was painful. It's still there though only a little painful, like a blue blob under my skin.

This is weird. I don't like it. I haven't done anything to cause this. It just appeared there.

Maybe you hit it without realizing and the demand of gamelan made it swell? As a teenager my wrists hurt like mad when I was on vacation with my parents and I didn't have a clue what could have been the reason until my mom with whom I shared a room told me that I slept with my chin on my wrist. That was that.

Ganglion?

I had two (one on foot, one on wrist). They form of um cartilege, I think, often fluid filled, in muscles, and can "pop" up under skin suddenly just as you describe.

I had to have surgical removal of both (they were pressing on nerves). The one on my foot was v. painful (top of foot). The wrist one, less so, so I waited--and ended up with muscle necrosis (the pressure of the ganglion had killed some muscle tissue).

If it doesn't go away quick/fast, might be worth checking out.

Yes, please go to the doctor. You don't want it to be a blood clot. It could be a ganglion as ithiliana mentioned above, but the fact that it swelled and bruised denotes blood beneath the skin. It could be simply a broken blood vessel, but the swelling bothers me. Please go to the doctor's and then come back and tell me what it was to set my mind at rest.
