My fingers are frayed. I have just updated my fanfic recs at del.icio.us. I moved about 2/3 of the recs on my old recsite to del.icio.us, and now my head hurts. Gads, I hadn't realised quite how much I'd recced over the years! And quite how many links are now broken, LiveJournals deleted, websites disappeared ... so I did searches and dug up stuff, and now all the links work!

Except some people (*glares at [livejournal.com profile] badgermonkey*) have managed to take their stuff off almost completely. No trace remains, and what with the old CTB website gone the way of all flesh, I ended up linking to her flocked post about how asking her to send you her fic as an email attachment. Well! If I want to rec, I want to rec! Is it my fault that people take their treasures away?

Also, I have copies of everything I've recced on my hard drive. And filed in print-outs in A4 ringbinders. *g*

So, the stuff I've updated: I worked from early to more recent, so it's nearly all Lord of the Rings Real Person Slash. Ah, the glory days. Jenn, Brenda, The Rollling Smut Factory (111), Cordelia Wallace, Belinda, Gabby Hope (gone gone!! but found in some archive, hah!)... But there's also Ned Kelly fps, bibleslash, Black Hawk Down and Lord of the Rings Fictional Person Slash.

Enjoy.

Ok, you noted in the comment for the fic "When In Rome" that you don;t know who Neil Hannon is. Let me explain-
Neil is the lead for a band called The Divine Comedy and he RULES. He has a great super posh accent and the wit of Wilde. He is an Irishman and on my first trip to Ireland, my group and I stopped outside of this village church which was very picturesque. On the outside wall of the church was a water fountain for drinking and whatever else. One side was a hot tap, and the other side was a cold tap, and the middle said HOLY WATER. There was a drinking fountain by the tap. We found that hilarious. There was a wedding going on in the church and we saw the party come out. One of the best men was Neil Hannon and once everyone went about their own business, he talked with us. We had no idea who he was or who his band was. He told us he was a musician. He was delightfully witty so we checked out his music and have been huge fans ever since. You would love the stuff. Cheeky and really good.

Anyway, that is my Neil Hannon story.

*laughs*

I have had many conversations with [Unknown site tag] about Neil Hannon so that now, yes, I do know who he is. But I chose to cut'n'paste my initial reaction (on my old rec website) to del.icio.us in order to preserve initial enthusiasm, unclouded by later knowledge, and to impress upon readers that it is not necessary to know canon in order to enjoy this story.

Heh, but I am amused at your cavalry charge!

Oh, marvelous! This brings back memories. I don't know if it was just the flush of newness, but fanfic has never been as good for me again as it was in those early, early Lotrips days!

I felt almost unbearable nostalgia, updating those recs. Especially when it came to fics I could no longer find: sites that had disappeared, usernames that had been deleted, authors who have died (it is a stunning fact how many Friends met via fandom have died).

On a lighter note, I did feel some of the old excitement when football fandom hit me this summer. No, I should rephrase: it was not the old excitement, that can never be relived -- but some of my excitement felt like some of the old excitement. It was the same kind of rps silliness and freedom to go for it and just do anything at all, insane things, and ogle the pretty. But the fandom is different; all those names I recced, they are etched into my memory forever. Remember the Rolling Smut Factory? God, the nostalgia. Closer than Brothers! Where has it all gone?

Okay, I have to get this update out of the way soon and move on to newer pastures. HP recs, SGA recs -- I'm safe from tears there.

Isn't it strange how fandom is a microcosm of RL? There have been births, deaths (a lot of family, but only one fandom friend that I know of), weddings, divorces and everything else. And the early days of Lotrips were just so light and so much fun. It's hard to remember a time before tinhats and fraud and death threats, but it was for a short time at least, a fannish utopia. *sniffles*

As I was saying to [livejournal.com profile] azewewish just one minute ago, I don't know a single former lotripper who just says 'ah, well, that's a fandom I was once in, whatever; pass the butter'. We are all, in our different ways, totally nostalgic for that moment. Brenda was going on about the 'magic' of lotrips!

If I think too much about it, it will make me feel funny.

I have conscientiously bookmarked this, so I can go to sleep secure in the knowledge that I now have an epicurean selection of the highest calibre fics in my repertoire, carefully filtered through one of the finest brains in the universe.

*tips cap to you*

Nor is this by any means complete. Even for the lotrips. Gads, it's a lot of work chasing up those broken links!!
