I applied for an internal readership at my institution but wasn't even considered for an interview but rejected outright. At the same time, I received an email inviting me to come in for a 'chat' with the Dean about my future role, all with respect to a voluntary severance scheme offered to everyone working in a number of sectors, including mine.

I have been feeling feverish all afternoon. I just took two aspirins. I do not react well to these things. My vision is funny at the edges, and I find it hard to focus, and I feel agitated and have a headache.

Oh, Lobelia! That sounds like a panic attack, alright. Understandably. I don't handle things like that well myself and not more than one of them at the same time... Hach puh! *hugles*

Hach puh indeed. Things are looking up temporarily so we shall see. It's been a rollercoaster two months, I can tell you. Also (*whispers*), I've gone off football. For the moment. I know. Shock, horror, etc.

Obviously. Just re-read your ...erh... thrid to last (?) entry and commented this time. Any light on the horizon about a new job?

Also wtf about the football? But okay, the choice is totally understandable but still... *whimpers*

That must have been horrible.

Try and hold on to the belief, though, that this is merely the horrible prelude to something much better. And if you can't, then I shall hold onto that belief instead and keep it safe for you.

For the moment, see if you can seal it away it in a mental box to deal with later, and give yourself permission to do something relaxing and soothing.

And you get to see ME next Friday, which ought to cheer anyone up. :)

Despite more fic discussion than I've had in a year, I have not knuckled down to write the Big N. This mystifies me.

I recommend some pushups. I know it sounds a little nuts, but for me, one way to blow through anxiety is to jolt myself back into my physical self. The thing about pushups is that they're tough enough that you really don't need to do that many before your physical suffering is all you can think about. Sometimes a break from being upset can really help. [By the way, this technique is also highly useful for anger management.]

I immediately got down and started on the pushups but I forgot that I had done my back in and after two pushups I collapsed in agony and had to haul myself up onto the bed.

It is very vexing when the psychic debilities cannot be fixed due to the physical debilities.

Perhaps I could do vigorous zimmering or summat??

I'm so sorry you've had such a horrid day. I hope you see a path in front of you whatever happens as a result of that conversation. Academia can be a horrible place at times, but you're too intelligent and too talented to not find a niche somewhere where you are appreciated.
You're certainly appreciated here on lj.

*hugs*

if the demographic of your dept. is anything like mine, there will be peeps nearing retirement who will be *glad* to go. the keyword here is *voluntary*. at this moment in time, they are legally unable to *force* you (or anyone else) to jump ship. you're in the union, aren't you? contact them for advice, and if you're really worried, see if a union rep. can come to the meeting with you. and don't forget that *everyone* would have received this email, not just you (but if it transpires that this is not the case - the union should be informed asap).

as for the readership, well you know the favours-for-favours model that these kind of appointments tend to work upon. /cynical
