I think California should secede from the rest of the States --
oh, why not the entire West coast, Washington included, and then I would
move there. Not that the US has a great history of dealing with
secessionists. It could be another Chechnya! But then they could form a
union with Australia and become a kind of superpower Pacific
EU-look-alike, with a shared currency and an underwater tunnel.

Not another Chechnya, another American Civil War. Because damn if Washington DC would be willing to give up the revenues (California is home to more than 10% of the US population) and Pacific ports that they get with California. They'd also fight to keep the movie and software industries. I'm not sure about the produce and wine.

California really is an unwieldy behemoth. And a ridiculously improbably percentage of the population of the US lives near Los Angeles alone -- something like 3% in just Los Angeles County.

But it's a lovely dream.

Well I have nothing against succession - we do have the world's fifth largest economy - but I'm not sure we'll ever look like an new EU. For one thing, we're about 99.9999% immigrants (at some time in the past 158 years) and for another we deal with it pretty well. Not perfectly, by any means, but pretty darned well. And not enough castles or Roman ruins. And no vestigal monarchies and the mindsets that go with them.

You know I'd love to have you locally. But after your bad experiences here, I suspect it's not a great idea. Also, it's a rilly long way to Australia :-/
