Salute him now
Mar. 31st, 2008 11:14 pmEverybody, salute this man.
Who is the most important man in our lives? In all our lives wot read this??
No, it's not Shahrukh Khan. Nor Orlando Bloom. Nor Rodney McKay, Cristiano Ronaldo, Aragorn, Draco Malfoy, Captain Jack et al.
If you know who it is, then do reply without glancing under the LJ-cut, *g*.

It is Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web. He invented it in 1989 (incredible that one man invented it, one man). He put it in the public domain in April 1993. He didn't ask for royalties. He didn't ask for a penny. He gave it to us all for free. He transformed my life 4 evah. All our lives. Thank you, Tim! I adore you111!!1
A thing that annoys me
There was an article on Tim Berners-Lee in the Telegraph , and it included a word and a juxtaposition that annoyed me highly. Guess the word:
It is no exaggeration to call his invention the most significant since the printing press. But it has also helped gamblers bankrupt themselves, fraudsters prey on the gullible, and pornographers sell their virtual wares; and, of course, it has created a sinister new breed of paedophile.
Yes. The word is the but. And the juxtaposition of pornographers next to gamblers, fraudsters and paedophiles. Wtf? The hypocritical stigmatisation of pornography can get me into endless rants. In what way is pornography a but in contrast to the interwebs being signifcant? Is pornography not "significant"? How come 2 of the 3 most expensive domain names evah were sex.com and porn.com? I mean, give me a break.
But worse than this!!! *rants* In what way, please, is pornography to be shoved into one drawer with crime and addictive self-harm (gamblers ruining their lives)?? Who is hurt by pornography? And I mean pornography, and not the crimes that are associated with pornography (exploitation, abuse, et cetera -- need I rehearse them?). Pornography in and of itself does not exploit or abuse anybody. It makes me tired and annoyed to see porn chucked in with paedophilia.
It is a two-faced, prurient, prude, hypocritical, puritanical and easy-way-out and holier-than-thou attitude that gets up my nose.
*end of rant*
Continue talking among yourselves.
P.S. *still ranting, grr* I write porn. I watch porn. I read porn. I am not a paedophile. I am not a fraudster. I am not a but. (I have one but I ain't one. Eeek, bad pun alarm. Oi, Lobelia, stay serious for one single rantipole, can't ya? *runs away*)
P.P.S. Abject apologies for the blatant misuse of the word 'rantipole'. Ma'af. :-)

Date: 2008-03-31 10:32 pm (UTC)That but is so full of shit. *joins you with the bad puns but it couldn't be avoided* I so, so, so agree: How dare those prudes put pornography into the same box as crime and paedophily? WAHHH!! And also: How stupid can you be to blame it on the invention of internet and not on the people/socities aka the real life. GRRRR!!! Like blaming video games for kids going crazy in schools. ARGH.

Date: 2008-04-01 11:08 am (UTC)Sex is a basic human need, along with food, shelter and *company*. So it pisses me off that every time TPTB want to take something away from us, porn is the first thing they cite as a reason for doing it.Or "think of the children" which is a good one as most of those in power see children as an *annoyance* until they are old enough to vote/earn revenue for the tax man.Grrr!
Your rantipole has infected me.
Dang good post though!

Date: 2008-04-01 04:39 pm (UTC)I must remind you that I sadly abused the word rantipole with refers to the person doing the ranting, not to the rant. :-)
One fantastic thing about the internet has been the way it makes porn freely available to everyone. I remember when I rarely ever used to see porn because one had to go into a news shop and get it down from the top shelf and only men did that. And the risk of being seen! Also, women's porn was very, very hard to find. So that one got the impression it was all an evol patriarchal plot and all women wanted was to hold hands and be fuzzy-wuzzy.
Yeah. Right.
And write Spock/Kirk fuckfests. *cackles* (But they, too, were hard to come by!!)

Date: 2008-04-01 10:39 pm (UTC)And totally agree with you on the porn. Porn is just one of many hobbies I indulge in and it has educational value. Without porn, I would have never survived the crude jokes of teenage boys (because I was watching the same things as them! ^_^)or understand the true dynamics of sex.
