Forbidden lusts
Apr. 5th, 2008 01:32 pmAn update on my latest obsession -- and by latest, I mean: as in last night. (Yes, things move fast in the land of Lobelia. They lurch from Second Life to Sims2 to yaoi manga to to nekkid Shahrukh to daytime soaps. *is dizzy*)
This is about daytime boy/boy (http://gaydaytime.blogspot.com/). This is a whole sub-genre of the category of Daytime Soap! The boy/boy angst and love!
Ever since
thelana introduced me to this a few days ago, I have been mainlining Verbotene Liebe (Forbidden Love -- what a title!) non-stop on youtube. (Go to the link above and scroll down. You'll see what I mean...) And drooling over the story of Christian/Olli and the delicious triangle plot of Christian/Olli/Coco.
The latest ep features this:

Video of The Kiss here:

And with English subtitles:

There is also this:

Angsty pretty boy/older Turkish man lust love and angst plus gorgeous pianist's hands. To quote
thelana: Guh. It's called Marienhof.
What's been happening in daytime soaps since the last time I looked (around 1978)??!! All this pretty boy love -- who knew?! And how international it is! Germany, Catalonia, France, Mexico --
Melodrama is insatiable. It spins its evol hypnotising web over everything (and made me burn my cauliflower last night). Gender? Class? Ethnicity? Who cares, it's all fodder for the maw of Melodrama.
As long as there are FEELINGS, all else is fair game. But there must be FEELINGS and LOVE HATE JEALOUSY DEATH plus deus ex machina catastrophes ("my house burnt down and I lost all of my CDs and my job!" "Olivia got shot!") but only in order to enable more FEELINGS and more JEALOUSY and more LOVE to take place. Sex, too, plays an entirely functional role in this universe: sex only occurs in order to facilitate angsty FEELINGS and incite JEALOUSY.
A favourite ploy of The Melodrama is THE LOVE TRIANGLE (see my icon for Essence of Melodrama). And in order to proliferate the triangle's possibilities, it seems that these days gender limits just fly out of the window. Because how much more delicious is the triangle when it's boy/girl, boy/boy, girl/boy -- and these soaps have girl/girl action as well. Insatiable, as I said.
Also note some scrumptious Melodrama dialogue:
"But ever since you walked into my life and turned everything upside down... you... with your face..." *angst ensues, and kissing* (Sülo)
**
"So what was sex like with your hot one night-stand?"
"He kisses beautifully. And he's so tender. And understands what I want to say before I say it." *jealousy ensues* (Oliver)
Sex is about 'kissing beautifully' and being 'tender'?? Oh, *hearts*.
**
"It's not because I'm a coward but... but because I desire him!" *said with much weeping and hair-tearing* (Sülo)
It's customary in these situation to *point fingers* at the evol temptress wot lured one in but I'm going to say: Thank you,
thelana!!
*cackles in deranged fashion*
*is fourteen*
Literally.
Because it's at age 14 that I penned my first melodramatic slash story. I just didn't know it was a genre yet, is all. *digs around in attic in hope of finding said gem*

Date: 2008-04-05 01:14 pm (UTC)But wow. Real pretty boys. The last time I watched Verbotene Liebe it was because of boy/boy love as well. Sadly one of the boys was not so pretty but the other one was + he brought the drama of having thought himself straight till then. The Drama. Whoot.

Date: 2008-04-05 10:31 pm (UTC)Ignore the acting!! Goodness, woman, never been in a TV fandom before? *cackles* They have to be wooden actors! Otherwise it's not slashy!!

And btw, I tried to disagree with you about wooden acting being necessary for slashiness but you might actually have a point. Damn. Prison Break maybe the only exception but of course, it's not a plotline there.

Date: 2008-04-05 10:09 pm (UTC)Ah, the innocent days of soap opera when the actors were still giving interviews going into detail about just how disgusting it was to shoot the love scenes and how completely straight they are.

Date: 2008-04-05 10:21 pm (UTC)I'm trying to think of analytically clever things to say about the historical and aesthetic difference between 2000 and 2008 but can't think of anything besides *squeeee*.

Date: 2008-04-05 10:28 pm (UTC)I did get the impression that they were trying to avoid kissing too. Or rather, they pulled all the stops for the big scenes (like first boinks or cheater boinks) but in the casual scenes it seems that they were trying their best to get through it with hugs and hair ruffling too.
It's hard to judge whether it's just the bad tape quality, but almost everything looks a bit more awful back then. They also seemed to do much fewer extreme close-ups of the reactions.
Speaking of directing and cinematic style, how can you guys sit through this incredibly annoying zap-zap-zap reaction shot thing they sometimes do on AWZ? It drives me nuts.

Date: 2008-04-05 10:32 pm (UTC)So Olli was in the show in 2000? But the actor looks about 21 years of age...!
What is AWZ?

I think he should be closer to 30. And *technically* Olli should be mid to late 20s too. After all when he was dating Tom he was a student and then he got into legal trouble and spent 5 years on the cruise ship.
But yeah, I'm in denial about that too ;D
AWZ, Alles Was Zählt the home of Deniz and Roman. I thought maybe there was a chance that you guys were watching that too. :D

Date: 2008-04-05 10:38 pm (UTC)And seriously? Woot. That's like - erh, forgot the name but the actor who plays Michael on Queer as Folk liked to be vocal like that, too. maybe he still is? No idea as I'm no longer in that fandom.
