Strangely, marking has become an activity that I quite like. I realise it's not marking per se that's irksome but having to mark a lot in a short time. At the moment, I have 52 scripts, and that's entirely doable. I do 5 a day so I'll be done in 10 days, and I'm already up to nr.28. I like seeing the fruits of my labours, and I'm rather touched when the kids students use the formulations and the introduction template that I advised them to use. And it's the normal mix of 2.2s and 2.1s, with a handful of near-fails thrown in, and that lovely sparkle of a First here and there.

It's quite tranquil. I sit. I annotate. There's a beginning and an end, and a sense of achievement. Just the right sort of mindless task for a currently-directionless-feeling person like myself. And it's always the same old sentences: It's good to include quotations but remember that each quote must be explained in your own words.... Read more; I would expect five non-web-based items at least in a first-year bibliography.... Avoid saying 'I feel'; instead say 'I will argue'....

It were all books in my day. None of this newfangled interweb nonsense.

I just did my first round of marking last semester. Too my own shock I had to realise that I'm pretty stern and too my even greater shock that this stupid new bachelor is rubish. It's supposed to be all about methods and stuff and then I get a student in semester 4 who doesn't include a single quote when obviously he won't have read all kinds of original sources from the Middle Ages himself? Wah.

Still. I like it. Part of the whole teaching thing that I still love. Of course, I only had like 10 essays to work through. For Mongolian Studies that's a lot. Don't think I ever had a seminar while I was studying it, where there were more than six students. heh.

Relax. *pets you* You'll get plenty more essays without references and quotes where that one came from... :-) New bachelor? Some newfangled German qualification? Hm, I think I've heard about it.

That sounds...erh...awesome? Heh. And yes, I'm sure to get more of them this semester.

Yup. All the Diplom- and Magisterstudiengänge get changed into bachelor. It's so ridiculous. Because it was fine and there are Fachhochschulen who offer a more praxis-orientated education but yeah no. They had to have the bachelors so it would be easier for German graduates on the international market. Not that a Magister counted as master and a good one. *rolls eyes*

So it's actually called 'bachelor' now? In English?

Yup. We now have bachelors and masters. Or actually, right now there are also still Magister and Diplom which makes it very chaotic and argh.
