Question to those of you who have a personal website that you pay money for:

What provider can you recommend?

And those of you who have a freebie website like myself (I have geocities but I'm not 100 per cent happy with it): what provider have you got? Or are you happy just to use facebook or myspace or somesuch?

Thank you! I'm trying to upgrade.

I have a Mac. I don't know if that makes a difference?

paid space:
http://www.webhosting.uk.com/

not the cheapest, but reliable and offer 24-hr support via msn chat (on which they can occasionally sound a bit terse, but i put that down to the fact that they're probably all stuck in front of screens in a stuffy room in bangalore). if you register your own domain name, don't forget to register for the additional (paid) service that will remove your personal details from the publicly-accessible WHOIS database.

...also offers a nice web-based site management tool that means you can play with your site wherever.

There's a free open-source chat program that will talk to MSN, AIM, googletalk, everything! <http://www.adiumx.com>

Aha! Let me check it! I would like a chatroom function, so that I can host 'virtual office hours' for students.

No, having a Mac shouldn't make a difference.

What are you planning on doing with the website? Is it for professional type work or for fanfic?

Hm, good question. I hadn't really thought this through. I guess: to post texts, to post images, to post audio, to post video.

...don't forget that video (and to a lesser extent, audio) annihilates your bandwidth - you're better off hosting on youtube or suchlike and embedding.

also, the mac question - what's more of an issue is the type of server that your host is using, as that may limit what you can and can't do. in a nutshell: linux (apache)=good, windows=shit.

this is useful. I was thinking 'hey, podcast, upload' but even my yahoo group won't let me upload more than about 4 minutes so I can just record the thing elsewhere and link. Ditto youtube. Do you know a good audiohost akin to youtube? Podtube?

Okay, windows = shit. I got that. I knew that already! I just don't know what Linux is so it's good to know that Linux is not Windows. That's all I gotta know.

I use dreamhost.com, and it's way better the geocities. They shut you down for filesharing but other than that, they're very fandom friendly.

Aha, dreamhost. I have never heard of them. I just went with yahoo because that's where the old lotrips group was (remember?) and so I got a yahoo email account and then a yahoo website. Um, what is filesharing?

[livejournal.com profile] anatsuno turned me on to dreamhost, they are fandom and explicit slash fic-friendly.

Filesharing is putting commercial music or videos ripped from DVDs etc. on your web site and letting other people download them. It's copyright infringement, and the various authorities frown on it, sometimes in heavy-handed ways.
